A. Departments that offer initial training but at best follow up with a seminar once a year. B. Officers who do not take advantage of training if the department offers it. C. Officers who do not go into the community to reputable martial arts schools for training. D. There is an amazing number of officers that do almost nothing to assist themselves in a physical confrontation. 1. No weight training. 2. No aerobic training (i.e. jogging, treadmill, elliptical). 3. No regular form of systematic exercise. I will share one example in our community that is probably repeated 50,000 times if not more. A young man started with misdemeanors and worked his way into felony's. Crowded prisons made each prison trip shorter than it should have been. Each time he returned to the community he was bigger, stronger and meaner. He also learned new tricks of the trade in one of the best learning institutions in the country from other violent felons. The end result, he is dead. Fortunately in his case he only took another criminal with him and no cops. More police departments and their officers need to be working on a weekly and monthly plan to be prepared to deal with violent people and remain relatively unscathed. S.C. Riggs Dennis Overall wrote: Another point to ponder as well Mr. Cyrus...is the fact that some so called trainers have never been in a true altercation in which they were truly in danger of death or serious injury period. There are also "paper tigers" out there that proclaim techniques and procedures for various situations that they have never been afforded the opportunity to use themselves in a life death altercation. Courage and fear are major factors that we never see discussed. It's hard to be prudent or reasonable when you lack courage or lack faith in your martial skills. Law enforcement training academy is comparable to martial arts training siminars in the fact that...without a continuace training program in which the officers receive constant weekly training and practice, the skill is not retained and cannot be automatically applied as a response when needed. Thanks" mc reply Master M, Unless you own the commercial facility I would suggest any of the various 1"+ thickness ,1 meter square puzzle mats. Just remember that they all have diffferent interlocking shapes so pick a company that you can get edging and replacements from. The puzzle mats can also be move to a HS Gym when hosting local competitions. I find my puzzle mats with a normal thickness falling/rolling mat adequete for breakfalls. just mt $0.10 mt $0.02 is free mc --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2007 12:25:08 -0500 From: Howard Spivey To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Flooring Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi, If you're able to make the investment, I'd recommend Zebra mats. They're the best mats I've ever been on for rolling and taking falls. IIRC, their basic mat panel is 3'3" x 6'6" and is 2.5" thick, with a nice tatami-textured surface. The only drawback is that they're not cheap. Some of the puzzle mats I've been on would probably be fine for TKD, but for taking falls, I've been on some that weren't much softer than concrete. Good luck. Charles Richards wrote: > I read > "Greetings all > I am about to put down a 2,400 sq ft of floor of some kind in my dojang for > taekwondo and hapkido. I will probably be here for five to seven years so I want a permanent floor and I have some money to spend. We drove a pick up and pulled a car trailer to their warehouse and picked them up ourselves. As long as you fall correctly, it doesn't hurt. But, if you come down squarely, well. you shouldn't come down squarely. Besides, we're training for real life right? : ) Gordon Okerstrom --__--__-- Message: 7 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] contacting the kukkiwon To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2007 15:33:10 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > I am trying to find an e-mail address for the kukkiwon.
