They work fine for our Hapkido & Taekwondo program. If doing a lot of rolls or throws, we pull out the extra throw mats. Congratulations to them both! (To make this a Korean Martial Arts related post....Kihap.) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Way back when, there was a guy named Fred Edish that fought in one of the early UFC's. Anyone know where I can find a clip of that? I check youtube but couldn't find it. I may be misspeeeling his name. They have good quality, reasonable prices, and very cool customer service (I sound like an infomercial). Check out their Series 500 mat system. They basically sell you the foam underlayer, and a vinyl covered nylon tarp to spread over the foam. You provide the frame, hardware, and labor...saves a little money. We already had the foam that was donated from the local high school's old gymnastics floor. We laid it down, framed it out, measured it, and then ordered the cover from Mancino. It ended up costing about $.99 per sq ft plus shipping...not bad for a cover that will basically last forever. I don't see us going through vinyl and nylon anytime soon. Puzzle mats are a good option for a small karate/TKD program. I would not recommend them for anyone teaching self-defense, throwing arts, or grappling arts. I've rolled on them before when visiting other people's schools, and I got mat burn from h-e-l-l. They are also not fun to be thrown on. Good breakfalls aside...you want something that will cushion the blow. It's usually not the single throw that gets you...it's the minor wear-and-tear over time that you don't notice until it's too late. The new podcast is called "The Meaning of Pinan" and covers why I now think that the almost universally accepted translation of "Pinan" (Heian) as "Peaceful Mind" is incorrect. The alternative meaning I suggest has ramifications for our understanding of the Pinan (Heian) kata and I hope you find my explanation of it interesting. More details can be found below in section 1. Sometimes you find martial art or gymnastics business closing down and you can get the flooring for less. Here is one web site that sell this type of equipment. http://classifieds.usgyms.net/ I myself don't like the rubber mats. I stub my toe at least once a month. The best floor I work out on was a stiff spring floor, hard break fall no problem. Good luck Master M this will be a expense that you will have to live with for a while.
