I've never heard of the "Ahn" character meaning "mind". It's composed of the characters for a woman under a roof. We place 6x12 folding mats, the best I could get 16 years ago, on top of the puzzle mats during our nights. In Cincinnati when I had a hapkido dojang that was open 6 days a week I placed those mats on a suspended floor. It was made out of vertical 2x4's with 2 layers of plywood that had a layer of insulation Styrofoam in-between. That was a very nice setup for hapkido. Jere R. Abdallah, 23, lost twice to Diana Lopez at last week's Olympic trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., including an overtime defeat in the final. However, Abdallah and her parents - Thomas and Rhonda Duhart of Houston - believe the match was judged improperly and that Abdallah should get a rematch to decide the Olympic berth. "We're trying to get a fight-off to correct the mistakes that happened," said Abdallah, who earned a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics at Athens. "I want to be on an even playing field. I don't want them just to put me on the team. I hope that they see that mistakes were made and that I can have another chance." Father critical of officiating According to USOC regulations, disputes must be submitted to the organization, which will attempt to resolve the issue. If the issue remains unresolved, it can be submitted to an American Arbitration Association arbitrator. Abdallah, whose father wrote a two-page letter criticizing the officiating at the Olympic trials, said: ''I thought there were things that should have gone differently with some of the points. I don't know why certain points were not scored, and I don't know what more I could have done. ''There have always been politics in taekwondo, but I love the sport. I'm sad to see this happening, and I feel badly for people who may have seen (her final match with Lopez) and now don't feel they have a chance in the sport." Lopez joins brothers In his letter, Duhart referred to ''the horrible judging and scoring and worse refereeing" during the trials. He also cited past disagreements between his daughter and Diana Lopez and with Lopez's oldest brother and coach, Jean Lopez, who is the coach of the Olympic team. Jean Lopez could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Dave Askinas, CEO of USA Taekwondo, said Duhart's criticism of the federation is unwarranted. ''(Judging) is subjective at times, and calls can be looked at in various ways," he said. ''I'm disappointed for Nia. We would have loved to have sent both athletes (to the Olympics). But if he is impugning the honesty and integrity of referees, he is going down the wrong path. Those days are long gone." Diana Lopez's victory over Abdallah enabled her to join her brothers - Steven, a four-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, and Mark Lopez - at the World Taekwondo Union's world Olympic qualifier next month in Manchester, England. Athletes who finish among the top three at the world qualifying event in Manchester will qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Those who fail to qualify at Manchester can qualify their weight division but not themselves at the Pan American qualifier in Colombia in December. In that case, another match will be scheduled next year to select the Olympic team member. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Joseph Cheavens" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Re: Flooring Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2007 16:22:17 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Another problem I've had with puzzle mats is that the tend to be a little softer at the edges of each puzzle piece, which can cause ankles to roll. They're the best mats I've ever been on for rolling and taking falls. IIRC, their basic mat panel is 3'3" x 6'6" and is 2.5" thick, with a nice tatami-textured surface. The only drawback is that they're not cheap. Some of the puzzle mats I've been on would probably be fine for TKD, but for taking falls, I've been on some that weren't much softer than concrete. Good luck. Charles Richards wrote: >I read >"Greetings all >I am about to put down a 2,400 sq ft of floor of some kind in my >dojang for >taekwondo and hapkido.
