Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> It's going great. We're in the process of putting together our new gym, and moving into it. We teach a class at a local school, but my training partners can't stand the school owner (read: hates his guts) so we decided to get our own place. We have about 20 guys in our group right now, but I don't know how many will follow us over to the new place. Amazing how many guys want to get into the ring and fight MMA compared to just 2 years ago. The UFC reality show has sparked a lot of interest. I'm just training and teaching right now. My last fight was back in May. I lost a 5-round decision. It sucked, but I know the guy that I fought. He is super cool and highly dedicated. He wants to make his living at MMA, and will probably turn pro within the next 6-months. I'm also busy helping other guys get ready for fights. It's difficult to balance being a competitor, coach, and trainer...on top of career, family, personal time, etc. Right now I'm lifting, eating, and sucking down creatine. I lost 20 pounds to fight at welterweight last time...I will not be doing that crap again. I plan on bulking up to about 195 (I'm 190 right now), and just cutting down to 185 for fights. This is a power-endurance sport, and last time I was long on endurance and short on power. Won't happen again. I will probably fight again before the year is out, but I have some strength goals I want to hit first and I need to work on some specific technical areas. I'd like to win another amateur title and make a run at some lower level pro shows, but we'll see... It will really mean alot to his wife. My uncle died right around the time my cousin's moved out of the house so it would have just been those 2 together enjoying each other, but he passed away. Now she's lonely. So doing something like this will be great for his family as well. It is a constant reminder of something he loved. Jye kent pike wrote: Our school recently lost a 3rd dan student who died suddenly at age 49. His wife has told me how much his martial arts training had meant to him, and that he was looking forward to becoming a master. I would like to award him posthumously a 4th dan certificate and belt, and present it to his wife at our next black belt testing. I have never had to deal with anything like this before, and I was wondering if anybody knows of any protocal or guidelines, or has any suggestions regarding this matter. Thanks for the help, Kent _________________________________________________________________ News, entertainment and everything you care about at Live.com. Being an instructor can make it pretty darn tough to get in personal training time. Had to laugh at the 20lb loss - bet everybody stayed clear while you cut that kind of weight! I'm running about 2 miles a day trying to drop some weight....don't think I'll hit the 185lb division though. Let us know how you do in your next fight.
