U.S. District Judge Gray H. Miller set a 10 a.m., Tuesday hearing on Abdallah's request for a temporary restraining order, which would prohibit USOC from advancing Diana Lopez of Sugar Land as the federation's candidate for the women's bantamweight/featherweight division at the World Taekwondo Union's Olympic qualifier Sept. 28-30 in Manchester, England. Lopez, the younger sister of two-time Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez, twice defeated Abdallah at USA Taekwondo's Olympic trials last month in Colorado Springs, Colo. But Abdallah claims she was victimized by "bias, unfair judging and violation of rules" designed to give Lopez a chance to join her brothers, Steven and Mark, on the 2008 Olympic team. Abdallah this month said she would seek a USOC arbitration hearing. But her attorney, Warren Fitzgerald Jr., said she filed suit because he believes arbitration is weighted against athletes attempting to overturn improper decisions. The lawsuit asks the court to declare Abdallah the winner of her second match against Diana Lopez and to order a third match to determine the U.S. representative at the world Olympic qualifier. If a rematch cannot be scheduled this month, the lawsuit asks that Lopez be ordered to fight Abdallah at a later date. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2007 10:03:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Ken McDonough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Completed workshop and work out area Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net My completed workshop: - 40' x 80' with attached 14 x 50 attached breezeway; concrete slab. About 350 players from more than 100 countries are expected to participate in the World Qualification Tournament, which will be held at the M.E.N. (Manchester Evening News) Arena. The three-day tournament will be officiated by 54 international referees selected among the 184 participants in the WTF International Referee Training Camp for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games at Woosuk University in Jeonju, Korea, in July 2007. Through the world and continental qualification tournaments, the best 29 referees will be finalized for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. A total of 128 athletes are scheduled to compete in the taekwondo competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Through the Manchester World Taekwondo Qualification Tournament, the top three athletes from each of the eight Olympic weight categories will qualify their National Olympic Committees a place in the respective event. Through the WTF's five Continental Taekwondo Qualification Tournaments, a total of 96 places, comprising of 48 men's and 48 women's places, will be allocated. Asia, Europe and Pan America will be allocated 24 places each in the same competition format. Africa and Oceania will have 16 and 8 places, respectively. The African Taekwondo Qualification Tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is scheduled for Nov. 1-3 this year in Tripoli, Libya. The Asian Qualification Tournament is slated for Nov. 29-Dec. 2 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; the Oceania Qualification Tournament on Dec. 1 in New Caledonia; the Pan-American Qualification Tournament on Dec. 7-9 in Cali, Colombia; and the European Qualification Tournament on Jan. 26-27, 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey. China will field two male and two female athletes in the Olympic taekwondo competition without participating in any qualification tournaments, as it is automatically qualified as the host nation of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. After consultations among the IOC, the Association of National Olympic Committees and the WTF under the Tripartite Agreement, four invitational places, also known as wild cards, will be distributed to certain nations. --__--__-- Message: 5 Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Goguryeo part of Korean history Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2007 23:05:05 +0100 From: To: Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have a question for any Korean experts. Did the ancient Koreans use falcon like the ancient Japanese nobility? Many thanks chaps -----Original Message----- From: The_Dojang [mailto:the.dojang.digest@gmail.com] Sent: 14 September 2007 03:17 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Goguryeo part of Korean history U.S. scholar argues Goguryeo part of Korean history September 8 Sarah M. Nelson A well-known U.S. archeologist publicly stated that that Goguryeo Kingdom (37. B.C-A.D. 668) is part of Korean history, bringing the Goguryeo issue to an international archeology conference for the first time. Known as a Korean history expert in the international archeology arena, Sarah M. Nelson, 75, Dept. of Anthropology at the University of Denver, delivered her presentation on Goguryeo at an international conference on Chinese history held by a Korea-based Chinese history research body at Korea's Kyungpook National University on Sep. 7. Based on the study of its relics, Nelson placed Goguryeo in Korean rather than Chinese history for the following reasons: the Goguryeo language seems to be the root of modern Korean; the shape of the chima (skirt), jeogori (female jacket), shoes and king's hat shown in pictures found on Goguryeo relics resemble those of other Korean kingdoms; the style of Goguryeo tombs is found only on the Korean Peninsula, and Goguryeo relics bear more similarities to those of other ancient Korean kingdoms of that time period -- Silla (57 B.C.-A.D.935) and Baekje (18 B.C.-A.D. 660) - than they do to those of China. This is the first time the issue of Goguryeo was taken up at an international academic conference attended by archeologists from many countries, including Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan, and the United States. The issue of Goguryeo was triggered by the "Northeast Asia Project," a Chinese government-backed attempt to revise history. As sanctioned by the project, Chinese scholars have been claiming part of Korean, Mongolian and Manchurian history as their own, much to the consternation of neighboring countries. The Korean government and academics have set out to prove conclusively that Goguryeo was a nation on equal footing with that of ancient China instead of a tributary colony as argued by Northeast Asia Project scholars. "Nelson's argument holds significance since it is based on objective and scientific reasons reached by comprehensive analysis," said Im Hyo-jai, Seoul National University professor and the head of the World Archaeological Congress. Nelson served as the president of The Society for East Asian Anthropology for six years from 2000 to 2006. Her publications include "'Neolithic Sites in Northeastern China and Korea" (1990), "Archaeology of Korea" (1993) and "The Archaeology of Northeast China" (1995). She won the "John Evans Professor" award in 1996 and "Choice Outstanding Book" in 1999. _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 2,200 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net **************************************************************************** LONDON FIRE BRIGADE Live in London?
