Bias judging has always been around in all tournaments. It is up to you to be good enough to transcend that or knock the other person out. My GM who was just honored in the TKD Times Hall of Fame and was already in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame including Olympic gold medalist in Judo never won a match by points. Neither did most of the people I the 60's and 70's. When we were young we were taught that tournament was not about wining and that winning was lucky many times due to bias judging and that you need to knock someone down or out. It was more important to do your best, that effort was its own reward. It was an honor to loose to someone better but do your best actually surviving not being knocked out even if you had to crawl back and earn their respect. GM Choi said to me in 2003 so disgusted they should just call it Kwon Do because nobody knows how to use their hands anymore. No wonder people have flocked to watch MMA and UFC. Olympic rule fighting has become so watered down to worship the clock and win by one point that it is embarrassing and boring to watch. I have seen good green belts fight better. This Traditional Indigenous Native Art was never meant to be so commercialize and is truly paying a price for it now. The fighting is a simulation of fighting to the death with out death. In historic times it was used to decide elections of different governmental positions and the opinion was given that when this was used to choose leaders times were better than men of letters or (Lawyers) were used. In 1974 we had our first All NW tournament that still runs today now the Oregon cup. Many rival styles showed up to prove that TKD was weak. They were proved wrong and some left in ambulances. It was a double tournament both open style and TKD and both non contact and full contact. I was a bit naive thinking that of course people would fight fare and not violate rules. If they started getting behind in points in non contact they would get mad in just paste you in the face. I remember GM walking around that day noticed me face down and just said oh! Disqualification. That's kinda how my day went and I was later awarded a very nice trophy for sportsmanship its one of my favorite in fact my fondest memories of competing are not of winning but loosing because I learned much, certainly protect my head better. We never thought to complain, we traveled around other states and even Canada and there were no rules about weight or age, sometimes they out weighed you by 70lbs, but to give a good fight for the crowd and earn the respect of the other guy that would tell you later hey you're a good fighter was enough and you learned. Full contact has become a lost art and unfortunately this has translated into poor self defense with no mindset of actually focusing on hitting vital areas attacking only the air for nothing. I force my students to inflict some controlled pain and to receive it so they will know what the actual effect will be and to not just mindlessly adhere to a tradition or written example but to relate what they are dong to targets of opportunity based on the person's size and how there body has turned, change the strike or the target if needed but don't just attack the air. If you do not then it is just dancing get a dress or a Tu Tu your in the wrong class. I am glad the local judge threw out the case and I hope the Olympic hopeful learns to fight better. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2007 09:56:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] video clip: hapkido sparring Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fURJty0lKq0&NR=1 --------------------------------- Tonight's top picks. Is it? It was a pretty awful seminar I went to, by the way. 6th dans who didn't know the curriculum, 6th dans who injured a 7 year old INTENTIONALLY (he was being "mouthy"), and then injured the kid's father in exactly the same way (kote gaeshi). Two temps who injured each other with simultaneous jump roundhouse to the kidneys. They changed the curriculum IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WORKSHOP on the basis of what my partner and I were doing. And of course, it was the only workshop I've been to where I was told, "you stop learning now." I was learning their sword form faster than their brown belts. I think I would have preferred the dancing!
