That helps with most. Board breaks at the upper belts. A few tournaments helps. Seminars can also be a motivator. I'm afraid my instructor might get the wrong size for my black belt..so can I buy my own or tell him the size I need. He usually just hands out belts, and if' they're double wrap, well, tough. Some have been so small it looked like I had pigtails ... I seem to wear one particular size over the rest. About the writing on the belt and the emblems.. Isn't it the instructors obligation to buy the correct size belt, buy the emblems and make sure the writing in the foreign language are all correct? Because my instructor asked if I had any of the emblems to put on the belt. Does my instructor have it together or am I expecting too much for the $100+ BB test fee. The Korea KiDoHwe Senior Board of Masters announced that Dr. Kimm will be the official overall Director/President of the KiDoHwe in the USA. GM JR West has been named as the KiDoHwe USA Vice President, in charge of all matters related to Hapkido. Dr. Kimm will also head up HanMuDo for the KiDoHwe. The first BB I received had my name spell correctly but the school name and the Taekwondo was written the opposite direction of my name looked kind of weird). So my advice would be to bring your concerns up to your master (respectfully). I remember that I was a little disappointed in the way my belt looked. But in the end its who you are and not the belt you wear. Good luck and congratulations for sticking with it. I do have 50 pound more muscle then she does. iHs, Robert L. Wood I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence I can reach for; perfection is Gods business. Michael J. BB Club students are given belts with black stripes with the visualization that in time the whole belt will be Black. Have special meetings for those students soon you will see many that want the black stripe; even adults are motivated by them. I was wondering if anyone on the list has had the opportunity to see the North Korean demo team that is touring the country? I was fortunate enough to catch last nights performance and it was well worth the 5 hour drive to see them. They were spectacular athletes. I think they ranged in rank from 1st to 3rd dan for most of the team if I heard them correctly. I just came back from South Korean a couple months ago and the Norths team is just as impressive as the Souths. The one BIG difference I noticed was the level of passion in the performance. The South Korean team had a real fire in there eyes. Lots of passion and tenacity. The North Koreans seem to lack that. I chalked it up to the fact that they are scared - you can see it in there eyes and body language. Also they are more than likely jet lagged and exhausted from being paraded from place to place. The demos that the North and South put on were almost identical. If you have a chance to see them, take it. They were awesome. Since we expect that attrition around the middle gup ranks, we tend to talk to them when they sign up and also when they get promoted to green belt... Yes, it gets harder, and we tend to compare it to school... When you get to a higher grade, would you expect them to keep trying to teach you your alphabet? Shouldn't the books you read get harder? Math problems, same thing? Same thing with advancing in a job... If we talk to the parents before they test for green belt, that seems to help some too... But some parents, unfortunately, will back down when things get hard for their kids... Not much we can do about that... And yes, thanks for the additions to the attrition... White belt, absolutely... Gotta be the highest... After that, for us, it's the middle gup ranks... We really haven't lost that many once they get to 1st dan though... But we have lost several at 1st gup... The fear of testing / failure / black belt expectations gets them, and they just don't ever cut it... *shrugs* Of course, once someone gets to 2nd dan, it seems like they're in it for life :) *bows* - Bert -----Original Message----- From: "Gordon Okerstrom" Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] RE: Green Belt Woes Hello Mr. Edens, We lose them at white belt (you expect that when they realize they have to work to advance). Same at chodan. Your technique and skill level once the instructor ties on that BB is not any better than it was five minutes before while wearing a red belt. If you loose them at white belt when they find out that learning the MA is a life time effort and not like the 40 hour course they took when they got the certificate on some MS software, you may be on the right track! I wish to share something that we did in the early 70, when I started. It is not something I have done, nor is it something I have seen done again. Before we could even buy a dobok and put on a white belt, we had to attend a month long informal introductory class. It consisted of etiquette, warm-ups, stances, very basic training, demonstrations, and lectures in a language I did not understand. All it did was get us ready to begin formal classes and let us know that there was a LOT to learn. But it worked as no one really dropped out at white belt. Jere R. Hilland, Fargo, ND www.rrhapkido.com PS. Michael. I enjoyed the cake analogy! That was good... <<<(Edited) We lose them at white belt. We loose them after black belt. You have some great ideas. We use a black stripe on the gup rank youth belts. Actually, we have a pretty elaborate striping system. We use a red stripe for learning their patterns, a blue stripe for the meanings of their patterns and a white stripe for their ho shin sul (self defense). Additionally, we give a green stripe for outstanding behavior in the dojang, a gold stripe for all A's on their report card and a silver stripe for B's. We use the black stripe for "black belt behavior". This is a lever for the parents. When the student performs an act of selflessness, a special chore or modified behavior for the parents at home or just outside of the dojang, the parents can share that with the instructor and the student gets awarded the black stripe in front of the class with all the pomp we can muster. They are not handed out regularly, just two or three a week and we don't just take the word of the student. If I remember correctly, we got the idea of the black stripe from some of the posts on this forum. Thank you Master Terry. -And congratulations Grandmaster West on your appointment.
