The mats tend to collect a lot of grime and lint. I disinfect them once/week and vacuum them every day in an effort to keep them clean. I HATE vacuuming them. Has anyone used one of those flat circular robots to do the job for you? Yes yes, I know...I should mop the floor using guppies..... #2 The mats pull apart at the edge of the surface. Anyone have ideas for keeping them together? I've tried taping the bottoms of the seams to limited success...... I have noticed (in TKD anyway) what might be called the black belt phenomenon, where the technical level of the BB candidate literally improves from the night of the test, to the nest day or so (the first class that they work out with their new belt on). I attribute this mainly to the confidence the new black belt has knowing he/she has passed that difficult first level into serious martial art training. I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this? What maters is what you learned. Can you defend your self and teach and pass on knowledge that is worth knowing???? Like Mr. Myagi belt at JC Penny hold up pants means nothing. What does mean something is what you learned and does your bb certification Nationally and Internationally recognized by people who are important or is it some piece of paper from some guy in a garage?? And frankly some guy in a garage who is the real deal and taught you more than all the Hamburger franchise paper dragons who could not fight their way out of a wet paper bag is ok too. Its what you are inside and your black belt and certificate mean nothing if you stop training and become feeble its what you have to give and what you can do till you die. Uniform and belts are just clothes mean nothing can show pride good pride bad pride. You should be concerned about surviving black belt test not your belt?????? When I tested you had to quite work train six days a week six hours a day or more for the last six months and break a small red fire brick knife had among other things just to pass. A year ago I took some of my green belts to watch a black belt test it was so pore my green belts were way beyond them I felt bad for the students and the master?/ who taught them too much money effecting teaching today?? --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Thomas Gordon" To: Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2007 21:54:37 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] importance of belts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "We place little importance on rank, consequently we don't really have that problem.....If you loose them at white belt when they find out that learning the MA is a life time effort...." I'll post this again and I'm sure it'll get similar responses. Rank is much like money, I typically find those that have a lot of it (or can't get it) seem to think it must not be real important. Master Hilland is a sixth degree. And there's no argument, he is very precise on the mat and I enjoyed the seminars. So please, no offense meant. With that said, I don't think I've ever met a new student that walked in saying they were looking for a lifelong hobby/lifestyle. They come in to lose weight, gain confidence, learn some self defense, etc. Regardless of the art, very few that start at white belt make it to black belt. While I'm not sure of the odds of a new white belt making it to black belt, I do know that in ITF, before General Choi passed away, the odds of an American going from 1st degree to 6th degree was 1 in 117 or a 0.85% chance.* The statistics show that martial arts is not a lifetime effort for most. If so, the odds wouldn't be so bleak. However, the question was how to retain midlevel ranking colored belts. By looking at his website, Mr. Okerstrom teaches at a school offering classes six days a week and for all age levels. With a larger full-time school, rewards system is very necessary. With children, it's even more critical. New enrollments plus a strong retention is absolutely vital. Not as critical if a person wants to have a career outside martial arts and run a part time program out of a church/YMCA/community-center. Thomas Gordon Florida *(footnote) I've met a few people that had a bit of a meteoritic rise in rank. One person in particular got their first degree well after a year of me getting my second degree. And yet somehow, despite getting fifth degree after me, they still managed to get sixth degree well before me. That's not the 0.85% chance I'm talking about. I find those types of people embarrassing and bad for the image of martial arts in general. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2007 07:39:15 -0400 From: "Charles Richards" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] KiDoHwe USA Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I read "The Korea KiDoHwe Senior Board of Masters announced that Dr. Kimm will be the official overall Director/President of the KiDoHwe in the USA. They also tend to stay through Black belt. I find 5-7 year olds to be my highest drop out rate because many of them are running the household instead of their parent.... When things get a little harder or are not all fun and games (with instant gratification) they want to quit. And the parents allow them to. I call that a Nintendo outlook to goals setting. If you can't be successful at the game in 5 minutes, just pull out the cartridge... For the teen adults I find they like variety. In my block classes I teach a pseudo rotating curriculum in that I spend an entire class on one element. The students look forward to what are we doing tonight? Best of luck to all with retention! mc --__--__-- Message: 9 Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2007 13:06:53 -0400 From: "Brian Alexander" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Tournament Announcement - Washington, DC - November 3, 2007 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net TOURNAMENT ANNOUNCEMENT Gentle East Taekwondo's CAPTAIN'S CUP CHALLENGE XVI November 3, 2007 Washington, DC Tournament Director: Master John L.
