I have personally met some high ranking Korean masters that clearly did not deserve their rank but no one ever talks about this. I have had first hand experience of being viewed by my Korean counterparts as not being capable of getting it right because I am not Korean. That changed when I got on the mat with them. Gm Seo by and large helped to level the playing so to speak. IMHO, the martial arts is rife with national prejudice and racial bias. I can't speak for others but I follow Gm Seo because of my personal relationship and nothing else. As I previously stated, in the end, it all boils down to relationships. Ian A. Eastern Daylight Time, the_dojang-request@martialartsresource.net writes: IMHO it seems the real problem Gm Seo had was in promoting too many to ranks that they clearly did not deserve. e.g. Gm P. However it seems all those ended up in the World Kido Federation and not in the Korea Kido Hwe. Fu/Staff Writer Vacaville, California 10/17/2007 A well-respected Vacaville law enforcement veteran who beat a bout with cancer nearly a decade ago and who counted among his successes a loving family and a supportive community died Tuesday of the disease. Retired Deputy Chief Al Winfield was 61. The mood was somber Tuesday at his old department, as friends and former co-workers reflected on his life. Lt. Randy Weaver described Winfield as a fantastic police manager and top-notch leader who cared about people. "He was the type of person that, when he walked into a room, people stopped and talked to him. He had a command presence like few people I've known," Weaver said. "Everybody who knew him, who spent time with him, felt better about themselves afterwards." Lt. Ed Goldberg agreed. "He was a very inspirational and powerful leader, the type of person who just had a tremendous heart," Goldberg said. "He was very generous." Ted Winfield, the deputy chief's older brother, remembered a dynamic individual who was an outstanding athlete, an exceptional police officer, a dedicated family man and a person who placed a high value on honesty, integrity and public service. "He just had a special way with people. He loved people and he loved the streets and he loved being out there with the guys," Ted said. "He loved what he was doing. He loved Vacaville." Alfred "Al" J. Winfield grew up in Alameda County playing basketball, his brother said, but he later developed a serious interest in policing. He joined the Menlo Park Police Department in 1966 and, in later years, served with the California Highway Patrol, Huntington Beach Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Gulf Breeze Police Department in Florida (as chief), and Pensacola Junior College in Florida. He joined the Vacaville Police Department in 1988. Along the way, Winfield earned a bachelor's degree in child psychology from Southern Utah State College, a master's degree in management from University of Redlands and a doctorate degree in education administration. He held the rank of fifth degree black belt in tae kwon do, and owned and operated a tae kwon do school in Vacaville. Diagnosed with cancer in October 1999, he later beat the disease and returned to work in May 2000, retiring soon after. That same year he married his sweetheart, Lara, with whom he shared a special relationship, family members said. The pair have a "miracle child," 5-year-old Lance Jordan. He also has five other children. Winfield's spiritual outlook helped him cope with his illness, his brother said, and strengthened his bond with his family. A December 2000 article in The Reporter reflected his deeper insight. "You learn to deal with things in a different manner," he said back then. "You realize that you can't change what you're handed. It's not what's thrown at you, but how you catch it." Funeral arrangements are pending. --__--__-- Message: 5 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Korea Kido Hwe To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2007 21:17:00 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > ... IMHO, the martial arts > is rife with national prejudice and racial bias. I'd say not just in the martial arts, but everywhere. Where ever you are, there it is. Sad... On the topic of having to prove yourself, I believe that too is everywhere. I see it in the business world, the academic world, as well as in martial arts. Titles, degrees, ranks mean little if you can't deliver when the pressure is on. But this was originally about the Korea Kido Hwe. From this outsider's perspective it seems that they've done the right thing, all the way down the line.
