All organizations are in the ranking business...at least partially. Bottom line, that's how they survive. Some are unscrupulous about it. :) "Many tried to claim for years that their WKF rank was recongized in Korea when it was not. I suspect that they were too trusting and assumed what they were being told was the truth." Typically, in Anytown, USA, ITF ranking isn't worth a darn in a WTF/KKW school. That doesn't mean it's not recognized in the USA...just not at that school. At other ITF schools, there aren't normally any issues. We visited a few WKF schools while in Korea and I'm guessing the ranking was recognized there. I know the Secret Service type guys seem to go to Grand Master Seo while we toured the Korean Blue House and I was told that his organization (along with KoreaKidoHae) was one of a small handful recognized by the Korean Secret Service type organization. I know I'm not the sharpest person in the world but I'd suppose the certification carries some weight. Kinda interesting to me though is all that past talk about how certifications doesn't matter and rank doesn't matter. Jibber to that affect...but hey, now it's a big deal..and an honor even. Just peculiar I guess. And lastly, I appreciate you answering part of my email about the WKF being headquartered in California. Seems like my WKF certs had Korean post markings on the tube - heck, I may have misread it. I knew his daughter lived here in the states and that's the address on the website but figured that may just be for us on this side of the pond since it seems to be directed towards us. A few questions you missed: Since Korea KidoHae and World KidoHae both offer ranking to outsiders, is there any other difference that a student/instructor should be made aware of? I mean other than the comments about worthless WKF ranking that isn't recognized in Korea after promoting a fairly lengthy list of unworthy rank hounds. LOL! WKF's Grand Master Seo is that he's accessible and still gets on the mat. Does the president/grandmaster of Korea Kido Hae still get on the mat? Come here to the USA? Thanks for your time. Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2007 22:45:13 -0600 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The Police in Tokyo began registering Karate practitioners during the 1950s because of some muggings and other violent crimes occurring there. The violence may have been initiated by the Yakuza collecting gambling debts but many young men had been training at local Dojo. The police would take photos of any suspect that had hands with signs of practicing on a makiwara (Dan Ryun Deh/Conditioning post). They also photographed their hands, hence the expression: "registered hands". The U.S. M.P. detachments would borrow this information when needed but very few G.I.s were assaulted by these people. Whenever a violent crime took place, the victim would be asked to look at the mug shots and identify the perp. One of the most systematic and scientific martial arts, it is a discipline that shows how to enhance our spirit and life through training our body and mind. Taekwondo culture -- its simultaneous encouragement of patience and a never-say-die spirit -- has become an important vehicle for promoting Korean culture at large. The constant rise of foreigners taking up the martial art also shows that its values make a deep impression and have universal appeal. As with many other martial arts, taekwondo is a combination of combat technique, self-defense, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy. The World Taekwondo Hanmadang is a 15-year-old annual competition for Taekwondo trainees worldwide. Kukkiwon, the world taekwondo headquarters in Seoul, first organized the event in 1992 to spread the Korean martial art and its spirit worldwide. It is meant to be a place where practitioners unite and gain pride in the sport's legitimacy and historic value. This year, the WTH will be in Suwon Stadium, an hour south of Seoul, from Nov. 1 to 4. It is supported by Korea's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the World Taekwondo Federation, KBS and many others. In 2006, the event drew 5,000 trainees from 61 countries. The competition has four main events: Individual and Team performances, Team Competition and Recording (where individuals strive for personal or world records in skills such as consecutive turns and breaking tiles). The first three divisions include both sexes: Elementary (12 and under), Junior (13-18), and Youth (19-34). The Women's category includes all females 19 and over, while adult males are further divided into Manhood (35-45) and Middle-aged (46 and over). Team events can contain male and female members. Individuals compete to see who can break the most tiles or pieces of wood with his or her "knife hand," fist, or foot, while teams compete to see which can perform the most synchronized and accurate sequence of stances and moves (poomsae). Teams also try to see which have the best aerobics and self-defense techniques. Unlike the Olympics, the competitions feature no sparring. The participants will show off a variety of acquired skills, such as blocks, punches, open-handed strikes, various takedowns or sweeps, throws, and joint locks. Although public and private taekwondo organizations differ considerably in the doctrine and techniques they espouse, the art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, relying on greater reach and power to disable opponents. All participants must hold Kukkiwon-issued Poom or Dan certificates. For further information, please phone the Kukkiwon's Planning and Coordination Department at 82-2-567-4988 (from overseas), (02) 567-4988 (in country), or visit www.kukkiwon.or.kr. Don't be, even the "voices" are confused at times. :) "Do Gm West and Dr. Kimm get on the mat? Ummm, yes. With this recent announcement it seems that they are the head of the US Kido Hwe." Yeah, been in Jackson a few times for Master West's event. Met some great folks there. I'll try and speak real clear so that darn southern drawl doesn't cause misunderstanding. :) The President/Grandmaster of WKF gets on the mat and available to all students that attends his seminars whether it's here in the states or elsewhere. Not sure who the president of KoreaKidoHae is, if they're martial artist, if they offer seminars, travel, work with all ranks, etc? Not the US head, the organizational head.
