Although Tang Soo Do is generic, the U.S. Soo Bahk Do (Tang Soo Do) Moo Duk Kwan Federation is one of the earliest (1976)TSD organizations formed in the U.S. I was fortunate enough to be present when the TSD was changed to SBD, and my instructor is one of the founding fathers (Charter member) Web site: www.soobahkdo.com Curt McCauley Chief Instructor Channel Town Soo Bahk Do --__--__-- Message: 4 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2007 18:32:32 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Subject: [The_Dojang] Mister Hack ? FWIW, the above statment made by Master Terry is true to my knowledge; however, the statement was also true when there was only ONE Kido Hae... the Korea Kido Hae. If my memory serves me correct, the reason for Kido Hae was to see if various Korean arts could be united. This has been the goal in Korea for many years and for more than one organization. Many Grandmasters/founders of different arts were at one time or another involved with, or part of, Kido Hae. Think about it... if one man can hold legitimate ranks in various Korean arts, why is it a problem for an organization to recognize different arts??? I truly can't see why this has to be an issue at all, given the fact that a number of founders and GMs were/are part of the organization. The real issue here is no doubt the ranking of people who were in other people's opinion not qualified, and THAT IS a problem that will never go away. However, it is also a problem we have know about for years, and it was a problem BEFORE the new WKF began. I for one cannot imagine that one man, GM Seo, could have stifled ALL of the leaders within Korea Kido Hae (even though he was the Chairman). To me this suggests that it was OK (at least until the poop hit the fan). Korea Kido Hae Master Kim, who took over KKH from GM Seo for a little while, spent quite a bit of time at my home here in Canada during my time with WKSA, and he was there because I was involved with GM Suh. This means that Kuk Sool and Korea Kido Hae had close relationships way back when, and it was apparently no problem then. I think it is time to acknowledge that both organizations have had some problems, and let's hope that under the capable guidence of GMs Kimm and West it will get better. I hope WKF leaders ALSO improve research in the backgrounds of applicants. While we are at it, let's also come to terms with the fact that we will never reconcile the problems Hap Ki Do people have with one another. Some of these problems are legitimate concerns we do not go along with, and others are the result of jealousy or other human weakness. I for one chose to follow WKF for ONE reason... training opportunities for myself and my students without HAVING to travel to Korea to train. At the time of the split KKH did not have representation in North-America, and I simply could not afford the travel expenses to Korea. So, the choice was logical despite the fact that I knew of errors made by these organzations. Since I have never met a man who did NOT make errors, this fact did not discourage me from joining WKF. I just have to make sure I do not make the same mistakes, and that is difficult enough without wasting my time to worry about mistakes others may or may not have made. In the end, should having chosen one or the other for purely personal reasons have us squabble? I for one wish GMs Kimm and West the very best in their endeavors, and I KNOW they will do a good job for KKH. If the North-American folks involved with WKF can do the same, we will all be better off:) One thing we can probably count on... folks who used the system to advance their own cause usually do not stick around longer than it takes to achieve their goal before moving on. Best thing to do is check out several and find the 'best fit for you. Also consider location, the organization's rules, promotion requirements, annual and testing fees for both yourself and your students, and most importantly do research the organization and on the head of the organization including both positive and negative feedback. Above all, an organization should work to serve you and not the other way around. Hope this helps, Kevin Case 5th Dan, Tang Soo Do ----------- Does anyone know a good TSD organization to join.
