Myung Sung Kwang is the current doju of the I.H.F. (he is the son of Myung Jae Nam, founder of the I.H.F.) Don't know how they came up with the W.H.A. Jameel was present at the 7th HKD games in Korea last summer and got his 5th dan in the week after that. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.mooyesa.com/ --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "kwan jang" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2007 23:24:56 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] NKMAA Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Bruce writes: snip<< I guess that it would be of help to know if an umbrella organization such as the NKMAA also distinguishes between itself and Rudy’s KONG SHIN BUP.>> end snip Hello Bruce: Yes, there is a great deal of difference between NKMAA and KSB. I founded NKMAA in 1973 for the purpose of creating a bond between various practitioners, create options to train together, and if required offer assistance and certification. For that purpose I gathered a good board of Directors to assist me in running the organization. I seek their council, and NKMAA Masters oversee the various arts within NKMAA in which they have the expertise I might NOT have. NKMAA was set up as a non profit organization with the Canadian Government, and we now have membership world-wide (albeit on a smaller scale than the Korean based organizations we spoke of). We survive only because their seems to be a need we fill. Kong Shin Bup (tm) on the other hand was an art founded by my teacher, GM Pak In Shyuk. I simply carry on his work in his honor, and I do my best to give back at least some of the "gifts" I was lucky enough to reap while he was alive. When he ran the art things were very strict, and it was difficult to obtain rank. I continue to run KSB as he did, and the fact is that I myself could not even pass the requirements of first dahn KSB at this time in my life. This has not prevented me from continuing to train and teach the art, and as long as there are folks out there who wish to learn from me I will continue to do so until I croak. Will they earn rank in KSB??? Only if they can pass the same strict requirements and standards that GM Pak had set for the art as he taught me. This may not be the way he taught others; however, I can only do what I personally was taught.. I know no other way. So, the main difference is that with NKMAA I can (and will be) flexible within reason, as long as skills, desire, and a host of other criteria, are within (what I consider) acceptable standards. I can do this, because it was ME who founded NKMAA, and I did that with specific goals in mind that I stick to. With KSB, the rules were set by the GM who founded it, and I can't (or will not) change them... it was HIS art, and I just keep it alive to the best of my ability. I am proud of the fact that KSB has grown some, and it is better known now than it was when I took it over. I do my best to prepare for the day I will have to pass KSB on, and I hope the next person will do better than I have. Some people have asked me WHY I founded NKMAA. Well, if one looks back to the year 1973, you will soon find that there was not much available for Korean martial art practitioners here in North-America. WKSA had not yet arrived, Kido Hae was hardly heard of on this side of the oceans, WKF had not been founded yet, and neither had most people heard of KHF (if it was even around then). What we DID have was a lot of Korean Masters who competed with one another for the Alpha spot, and few (if any) cared much about us Caucasians. So, there was a need, and I stepped up to the plate. It can easily be seen that I did not found NKMAA to make Rudy top dog of anything... I simply did it because there was a need, and folks asked me for help. In fact, when WKSA arrived in 1974, I halted work with NKMAA and helped WKSA grow in the area I was put in charge of. I stopped that in 1998 for personal reasons, and I focused back on NKMAA. BTW, I wish to thank the folks who contacted me offline for their encouragement and kind words.
