Sometimes I think that we are dinosuars. Old standards, old traditions, respect for our elders and teachers, hours upon hours training on one specific form or technique. Never questioning why we should be this way. Don't even ask "when will I be promoted again Abagee?" ( Korean for father). You and I and people just like us will keep our art alive for future generations. Not watered down, but real, with the true mind, body, and spirit, that was passed on to us for safe keeping. I began in Judo in 1966 and Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 1973. Not to throw gas on the fire of the passionate discourse of the last few days I also was told to address my instructor using the title "Sensei". I never thought to question this as the first art I studied, Judo, I was also told to use the title "Sensei". We did sometimes use the English phrase "Grandmaster" when refeering to a teacher with a rank of 8th dan or higher. S.C. I read and post on this forum for the knowledge that is here. I have no interest in trolling, slamming or judging anyone here. I am simply asking a question of the people that I beleave have knowledge on the topic. Quote from my original post: "Let me preface by saying that I am not trying to point out anything to anyone or to have any discussion on what people call their schools or themselves. This is just a bit of knowledge that was passed on to me a long time ago and I was looking for verification. In fact this might be completely off topic for this group but I think that there are enough learned people here to have some insight. " The fact is that the discussion here simply reminded me of something I was told by a first generation Korean master who came over in the 60's. Knowing that there are many here who have lived and worked in Korea. My post here was my attempt at research. I have nothing against the name red dragon. In fact the admonishment about dragons from my master came in my young when I asked him about the Korean characters for RED DRAGON while talking to another student about my desired to get a tattoo of the characters and a dragon to go along with the big red birthmark I have. (He talked me out of it. Perhaps that was the reason that he pointed the dragon out as a negative symbol) I'm sorry if my inquiry seemed like a slam. I tried to point out that it was not directed at you in the least. It was as I said merely an attempt to gain some knowledge from the wealth that is available here. And in fact was very helpful. Thank you to all who answered with such wonderful information. On a side note. In response to Curt's post. The Chinese dragon can have 2,3,4 or 5 claws. Historically the number of claws indicated the social level of the bearer. 5 claws being the emperors dragon shown only by him and part of his seal. 4 for the royal family and house, 3 for the upper class and 2 for anyone else. To bare a dragon with more toes then your station was even punishable by death. In modern times the 2 toe dragon has all but vanished as no one wants to be thought of as lower class. And using the 5 toes while not punishable by law is still often looked at as arrogant. Thank you again to all who answered for the information on Korean dragons. It was most enlightening.
