I have one gentleman who started with me when he had just turned fifty and was recovering from ACL replacement. That was 14 years ago and he is now a Fourth Dan working on taking his Fifth Dan test in a couple of years. I have a lady who is in her fifthies and just got her 2nd Dan. My oldest student is 65 and working on his Black Belt, and although I don't let them take as many falls as my younger Black Belts they can still throw down. My senior student is in his fifties and is a Fifth Dan and has been with me for 20 years. He is very active in his training. He just back from Iraq in July. He moves like a 25 year old and has been in Law Enforcement for over thrity years. He is the perfect specimen of a good martial arts lifestyle. I believe the only limits to our training is self emposed. It is totally up to the individual to keep up a good regime of exercise, martial arts training ( actually getting on the mat and practicing ) and regular visits to the Chiropractor. Although I am far from Fifty I plan on being one of those guys that never shows his true age on the mat. Hope to test for green soon. I am 49, my husband is 50. We hope to be Black Belts in TKD by the time we are 54. I love Martial Arts, have been watching my son do it for almost 6 years, had to finally get in class myself. I am the only mom of a TKD student at our school who is taking classes as well. I am also the only woman in our adult class. I work hard to keep up with the guys, they are all my age-----I find lots of glucosamine, major stretching every day and pure and simple stubbornness and love of the sport are what keeps me going. I believe you can truly do anything you set your mind to, it is all about attitude! ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "ISA Headquarters" To: Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2007 11:29:45 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Over 60 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I will be 63 in January and find I have more fun now than when I was 18 ( which is when I started with Judo.) Training in martial arts for 57 years now (started when I was ten), and love it as much as I ever did. Despite a major back injury in '83 (while working at a real job), I still teach full time to make a living, and unless the Good Lord has other plans for me I will continue to "push" my students 'till they drop. One of my students went with me to Korea to compete there last year at age 77. He did not come in last place even when competing against people a third of his age ;) Warmest personal regards, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Jeff Yeagley" To: Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2007 10:16:30 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Still crazy after all these years... I'm 55, 7th Dan TKD, 6th Dan Hapkido, I have a B.S in Physical Education, Health , and Recreation, I am a Vietnam Veteran, and have been training since I was 15 years old. I train for 1.5 to 2 hrs each day before I teach 2 or 3 classes at my school. This is my life and livelyhood. I teach Sunday School each Sunday. I thank God for giving me the talent and abillity to do what I do each day. I believe that martial arts is the fountain of youth. Proper rest, nutrition, and faith in our Lord are keys as well to a happy state of wellness and well being. I try each day to be an example to my students. My wife will tell you different. I pray, study my Bible, and journal each day. God put us all on this earth to enjoy life. I think some people forget how to "play " as they get older. When you forget how to play, your body learns how to get old. I for one love to play! There was a guy introducing a pastor and he made a joke about the pastor being older then him, and when the pastor got up to speak, he said when he first met the guy he noticed the guy's hair (it's white...lol) and he asked the guy how old he was? the man replied what do you mean? the Pastor asked, when is your birthday, the man said april 20th....the pastor asked, what year? the man replied, "every year" I found that to be so funny, because my mother is just like that, she doesn't tell anyone her age....lol.
