Many attended various Universities and Colleges. Some were sponsored by Americans to teach their martial art here. In the book Martial Arts Traditions, History, People by Corcoran & Farcas 1983 page 244, it states that “The first wave (of Korean Instructors) included: S. Henry Cho, Richard Chun, and Duk Sung Son in New York; D.S. Kim in Georgia; J. Kim and Sang Kyu Shim in Michigan; Mahn Suh Park in Pennsylvania, Haeng Ung Lee in Omaha; Ki Whang Kim in Maryland; and Jack Hwang in Oklahoma…” I don’t find Jae Chul Shin listed anywhere and neither I nor any of my friends or associates ever heard of him until reading a 1970s article in BB Magazine. The following information is some of what I know about him and C.S. Kim: Shin, Jae Chul Was one of Chuck Norris' teachers at Osan AFB. Mr. Norris sponsored Shin’s move to the U.S. in 1968 where he later founded the U.S. Tang Soo Do Association. He arranged for the Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan charter convention in Burlington, NJ on November 30, 1974. I (and others) believe that he left the newly formed U.S. TSD MDK Federation In 1976 because he had not been given a position higher than board member. He founded the World TSD Association in 1982 and was asked by the Chairman of the U.S. Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation to discontinue his use of the Moo Duk Kwan name and logo. Master Shin did not respond to this request. Legal action was taken against him and the officers of the World TSD Moo Duk Kwan Association. The suit was dropped after Shin complied with the original request. Chung Shik Kim immigrated to the U.S. in the 1970s and began teaching Tang Soo Do in Pennsylvania. He was a charter member of the U.S. TSD MDK Fed. and elected Chairman of the Board in 1983. He resigned from the Federation in 1984 because of criticism by some board members and began his own organization soon after. To say that either of these two men had been sent to the U.S. in order to “push TSD” is a stretch. I’m sure they came only to better themselves as do other immigrants. H. C. Hwang attended the same charter convention and his father chose him to represent his best interests as the Chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee. That choice was expected by most present at the meeting (so I’ve been told) and the logical choice in my opinion. Ted Mason U. S. Well, no. We know that Hwang Kee sent CS Kim to the US in, as I recall, about 1972. No question there. HC Hwang came later in about 1974. And of course JC Shin in 1968. In the days before the web and the internet, I recall those were confusing times (1969-75) as we didn't know who was the official US rep of Hwang Kee. Was there one? Two? Three? Or perhaps someone senior to all of them like JJ Kim? Yes, others came before, but we have not heard of these others being specifically sent by Hwang Kee as was CS Kim and probably JC Shin. The question is what happened to Hwang Kee wanting JC Shin to lead TSD in the US and then shortly thereafter CS Kim? Only to then be followed up by HC Hwang? Were they not doing what Hwang Kee wanted? Did they break off from Hwang Kee once arriving here? Or were they just sent by Hwang Kee to help pave the way for HC Hwang? TKD is just such a part of my life, I think I would be lost without it. And I don't think my husband would recognize me. Although over the years there have been times that I believe he has resented the time TKD takes me away from him, I think that is outweighed by how proud he is. Although the Master Instructors, particularly the school owner, are addressed during class formally as Sabumnim (like when he steps on the floor to take over the class from a training instructor), the masters are all addressed as Master LastName, I am a Senior Instructor (addressed properly as "Senior Instructor Goldstein"), and the instructors are addressed as Instructor LastName. The adult leadership team members who are training to become instructors are addressed as Training Instructor LastName. Getting everyone to remember to do so, however, is tricky. I have students that I mentored for their blackbelts many years ago who still call me Mrs. Goldstein, and most address me as Instr. Goldstein, though Master Preira would really prefer we state the full title. One of our related schools uses "T.I. LastName" for their training instructors, and Master P. hates that. But it sure is a mouthful. Also, you can't be a certified instructor until both 2nd Dan, and complete the instructor course and pass a leadership-type test during a black belt testing weekend. Senior Instructor - same thing - more curriculum, more experience, at least 3rd dan, and a slightly different leadership-type test. I am the only instructor (or higher) in my school over the age of 30!!! Including the school owner! As for TKD professionals... I am in the same position of many others. I cannot afford to take the (HUGE) pay cut that would be required to work full-time at one of our schools. I toyed with the idea of opening one of my own, affiliated with our schools (since they franchise now - but that's a different discussion), but I'm concerned about, well, being too old! (besides start-up costs of close to 100 grand to really do it right) I would still consider it with someone substantially younger as a partner in both time and money. You see, our schools not only run night and weekend classes, but also an after school program, and a killer summer camp. School is open during the summer from 7:30 am until night classes are over at around 9:00 pm. I just don't have that type of stamina anymore. And I saw what my school owner went through the first year, running himself totally ragged, but he was 19 at the time with immeasurable energy. It's not that I'm not a positive person, it's just that I'm also realistic. If I get sick, I need someone who can cover. It's not an issue anymore at my school because we've developed instructors (and acquired master instructors from other schools). But the beginning is very rough. As for my day job... I am also a computer geek - go figure! Retail Business Systems Analyst. I think that the physical side of TKD balances the computer geek side very nicely!
