AJU was accredited by the State of Louisiana and offered a degree in "Asiatic Disciplines". I still have the books by Dr. Kimm on the "History of Martial Arts" (course AD-102) and make it required reading starting at red belt. Dr. Kimm was the academic dean and I was a member of the faculty's English Department. As far as Hapkido learning, there is NO point where one is not introduced to new material. After over 40 years of teaching Hapkido, Dr. Kimm still has much to teach me, and I have even more to learn......JRW www.hapkido.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "ISA Headquarters" To: Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2007 22:34:32 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: $$$$ Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray wrote: "...There are also a lot of martial arts degrees from non-accredited sources out > there. If I am not mistaken it was originally Radford College and at some point changed to Radford University. SC Riggs Ray wrote: > I became aware this past summer that there is a program at Radford University that was developed and overseen by Dr Jerry Beasley. I have no corroboration of this but I was told that this was the first program in America where you could get a recognized 4 year degree in the martial arts. By recognized I simply mean it stands as legitimate just as a degree in math or history being recognized not only in the state of VA but nationwide accreditation. < I believe the martial arts program at Radford is where one obtains a minor in self-defense/martial-arts from their dept of Exercise, Sport and Health Education by completing 15-18 semester hours of course work. I have no idea if Radford is a properly accredited university or not. I believe that places like Concordia University in Irvine, CA and perhaps the University of Bridgeport offer actual degrees in martial arts. Not sure if they are accredited or not. And of course in Korea there is a TKD Masters and Ph.D. program at Kyung Hee University for foreigners from their graduate school of PE. There are also a lot of martial arts degrees from non-accredited sources out there. All they want is your $$, so caveat emptor. Then yes this would and should mean a lot to every martial artist. It always makes one feel good to get those "thata boy" certificates to add to the collection, I know that I fram and cherish every certificate that I have, I recently trained in VA with the D.E.A in tacktical recovery and at the end I got a certificate of completion and it hangs on the wall just like all the others. But I was just wondering about the MA degree, because personally I would think it would be very nice to have such a degree to add. Do they off it via internet? Blankenship. George, I'm not really concerned with what Steven paid or did not pay. That is not the point here. I seriously doubt that you are in the biz of selling fake diplomas or degrees. e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diploma_mill The issue is the many fake diploma mills that will sell anyone any degree they wish, for the low low sum of $xxx. Places like Columbia State University in Louisiana or Hamilton University in Wyoming or Stanton University in Hawaii or Hartley University and University of Wexford in England, etc... will sell an MBA or Ph.D. or probably even a DMA (Doctor of Martial Arts) to anyone that sends them enough $. There used to be a good source for finding what institutions of higher learning were real or fake, Bear's Guide by John Bear. But not sure if it is being updated these days.
