I was calling around to friends over the holiday weekend and some have been concerned by my absence on the list and otherwise. The health issues are kind of status quo. Brain tumor is still there and effecting vision. Its a bit worse than the last bout, as far as vision loss, but its been halted with medication. Not much?further progression, but the concern is reversal of the new vision loss and ultimately beating the tumor into non-existence again. One of my senior students and dear friends was asking me how I was doing the other day. I allowed myself to vent a little frustration about not being able to do much in the way of martial arts. I'm limited to the treadmill and stationary bike. No lifting, no kicking, no throwing, no forms, nothing that could increase the intracranial hypertension (high blood pressure in the noggin). I told him when I started martial arts in the early 90's, it was because I didn't like the idea of going to the gym since it was boring. I wanted to work out and do something I found interesting. If I wanted to ride a bicycle to nowhere or walk in place I wouldnt have started martial arts, I would've joined the damned gym. Whew. Felt good to get it out of my system. I'm glad that I can teach, but feel a bit lazy since I'm not allowed to do much. My body instantly reacts when I overdo by sudden vision loss that returns after about a half hour of cutting that out. At least I have a gauge in that regard. Good news: its all potentially curable up to the point of vision loss where we started after the last bout (about 50% of my right eye vision....so now you know which side from which to attack me ;)). More good news: I took a part time job so I could get medical insurance to cover things this time around. Even more good news: Gotta lotta support. Thanks everyone for their concern and I apologise for being absent. I'm OK and will be OK-er...lol. Hoping that I'll be all ready to roll by February for Jackson. Hope everyone is doing well and had a great Thanksgiving, Mel :) Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com 1-877-847-4072 ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever. Apparently you missed my point, because I was not talking about an "Academic Degree," which would require a dissertation or thesis. My handing out a "Honorary Degree," whether it be a BA, MA or PhD, has nothing to do with Academics or "Higher Learning." It has to do with something you may not be accustomed to, 'Loyalty' to one's friends and students and honoring them in my fashion. I have some folks over in the Mid-East who actually pay me for those degrees, but when it comes to my students, I award them with honorable intentions and gratitude in my heart for serving me and the ISA and the community at large. I am not a"HACKWORTH" and do not want to be in the same sentence when his name is mentioned by others. That reminds me, where did you get your Korean Martial Arts degrees from? << I will be in Kenner, Louisiana on Nov. 30th, Dec. 1st & 2nd if you wish to show me the error of my ways. We can sit down and talk 'face to face' instead of through the DD.>> Now this IS really over the top. I have said what I have to say and it's not going to change whether I'm here, there or in another country. I have earned my master's degree and my wife has earned her PhD (she just finished her defense today - woohoo). THAT, sir, is why I strongly disagree with the practice. My master's is in Information Security and frankly the research was tougher than anything I had to accomplish in the martial arts - and there were some tough times there. Now I'm sorry you disagree but that is my stance. Since I am a professional and can't just walk away from work to meet you, please feel free to look me up if you make it to the WI area. I enjoy meeting people and sharing war stories. Trading notes can definitely be enlightening, but I have no intention of showing you or anyone else the error of anything. I admire you and your wife for getting those degrees and the hard work it took to get them, but pardon me when I say that my 44 years in Martial Arts was the hardest thing I have ever done (I started at age 18). Apparently, you did not work as hard at the MA's as I have because you were 'book-learning.' Academia is a whole different solar system when getting a degree, than the martial arts system. How many MA Grandmasters and Masters do you know who wrote a dissertation for their Masters degree in their Martial Arts? The reason I was inviting you and everyone else to Kenner, LA is because I thought you still lived in Indy. Thanks, Frank Respectfully, George I. Well, I think the more appropriate question here is how many grandmasters and masters have a Masters degree in their martial art. I suspect the anwser to that is pretty close to zero since that degree program is new or non-existant at most colleges and universities. I taught a self defense class back in 1985. I would never had done such a thing.Child abuse should be the charge. I have a couple of questions for anyone who can answer them. 1) Can anyone give away honorary MA,BA, or PhDs outside of Institutitions like colleges? 2) People who receive an honorary degree aren't supposed to use that in their title are they? is that proper? I would think that only institutions like colleges can give honorary awards specifically those 3. and although a person may recieve an honorary award, I don't think it's something that you put in your title like ' John Doe PhD". To me that's faking the funk...lol. That's like Jye Nigma CCIE....lol. yeah I wish. The three-day qualifying event, which will be held at the Phu Tho Stadium in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, attracts 85 contestants from 29 Asian countries and territories. Among the participating countries are Afghanistan, Chinese Taipei, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Nepal, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen and host Vietnam. The tournament will be officiated by 22 international referees selected among the 184 participants in the WTF International Referee Training Camp for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games held at Woosuk University in Korea in July this year. Through the WTF's world and continental qualifications, the best 29 referees will be finalized early next year. The opening day of the Asian qualifying tournament will feature two weight categories of the men's -58kg and the women's -49kg, while the following two days will feature three weight divisions each: the men's -68kg, the men's -80kg and the women's -57kg (on Nov. 29); and the men's +80kg, the women's -67kg and the women's +67kg (on Nov. 30). Through the Asian tournament, a total of 24 slots will be allocated. Each member national association is allowed to field a maximum two male and two female contestants out of four male and four female Olympic weight categories. The top three athletes from each of the eight Olympic weight divisions at the Asian qualifying event will qualify their National Olympic Committees a place in the respective event. The weight categories that a national taekwondo association has qualified for at the world and continental qualification tournaments are attributed to the association, rather than to the contestants who participated in the tournaments. A total of 128 athletes are scheduled to compete in the taekwondo competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Through the 2007 WTF World Taekwondo Qualification Tournament, which was held in Manchester, the United Kingdom on Sept. 28-30, a total of 24 places were allocated. The African Taekwondo Qualification Tournament was held in Tripoli, Libya on Nov. 1-2, in which 16 slots were already allocated. The Oceania Qualification Tournament is scheduled for Dec. 1 in Noumea, New Caledonia, in which eight places will be allocated. The Pan-American Qualification Tournament and the European Qualification Tournament are scheduled for Dec. 8-9 in Cali, Colombia, and Jan. 26-27, 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey, respectively, where 24 places will be allocated each. China will field two male and two female athletes in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as it was automatically qualified as the host nation of the upcoming Olympic Games. Four invitational places, also known as wild cards, will be distributed to certain nations, after consultations among the International Olympic Committee, the Association of National Olympic Committees and the WTF. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
