Some recommend using an ancient martial art. It's a growing trend to introduce toddlers to tae kwon do and it just so happens we have one of the best teachers in the world right here on Oahu. At 3 and 4 years old, there are many new faces of the future of tae kwon do in Hawaii guided by the man with booming commands. The smallest of kids are learning big lessons for life. With the punches and kicks, as Grandmaster Hee Il Cho helps kids grow physically he's also often the first to teach them grown-up concepts like self control, perseverance and respect. "Thank you sir," said the children. "We are constantly learning the experience of our life," said Cho. "That's what the journey is about, our life." This man with a soft side around kids is renowned as one of the strongest in the world in tae kwon do. A living legend, he's won more than 30 national and international competitions, taught special forces units, starred in movies and now oversees 120 tae kwon do schools worldwide. His contribution to the sport is stunning. "I've taught many, many thousands of people but I say black belts. I've produced around 15,000 students around the world," Cho said. Five years ago Cho and his family settled here in Hawaii Kai and now the best from all over come to be tested by him. More than 30 experts in the martial art were just here for a recent international competition, including John Kirkwood from Ireland. Kirkwood was testing to become one of only a few sixth degree black belt masters in the world. "It's been an honor to be here in Hawaii with him," said Kirkwood. "He's a pure legend in the martial arts." And at 9 years old, this boy who has studied under Grandmaster Cho impressed us with his spirituality. "Tae kwon do is to try to improve yourself two ways, mentally and physically," said Andrew Kwong-Wright. And then roared thru a powerful show for his second degree black belt test. They all make it look so easy but even the best know the agony of defeat. Tae kwon do is a life-long passion for this teacher of more than 40 years. And it's one his family will carry on when he's gone. His daughter Jasmine, who teaches with him also just tested for her third degree black belt. "I'm still learning - I know as a daughter, as a student theres so much that I fall short in - but it continues to really push me to be a better person," said Jasmine Cho. But of his many accomplishments, ask Grandmaster Hee Il Cho about his proudest moment and he comes right back to the kids. "I make the person - even little uncoordinated kid, undisciplined kid change a touch of their life, give me the smile on their face and that's the time that's the most valuable to me as far as when I'm teaching the martial arts," Cho said. And the kids answer, "I love tae kwon do -- go...I love tae kwon do." --__--__-- Message: 5 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 02 Dec 2007 12:26:19 -0500 From: chunjido@aol.com Subject: [The_Dojang] Still Kicking Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Jere wrote: Hi Mel!
