He had a trip to his third Olympics in hand, having qualified for the 2008 Summer Games the previous month. And he had a sore ankle. Yet he was at the workouts, participating as much as his ankle allowed, challenging his younger brother and sister, Mark and Diana, as much as he could. The Lopez family, coached by the eldest Lopez sibling, Jean, is in all-for-one, one-for-all mode heading into the 2008 Olympics. Only one, Steven, has qualified to compete in Beijing. His vision for 2008 won't be fully realized unless they all do. "How selfish would that be if I said, 'I'm qualified, so I'm done,' " says Steven, 29. "They've given so much to me. When I've gone to Olympics, they've supported me, and that kind of support goes a long way when you're at these high-pressure situations." The next crucial step for Mark, 25, and Diana, 23, comes this weekend at the Pan American qualifier in Cali, Colombia. Each of the younger Lopezes must finish in the top three to qualify their weight classes for the Olympics. Both compete in bantam/featherweight. If they don't finish in the top three this weekend, their Olympic journey is over. If they do, they must fight the top U.S. challenger in their respective divisions in April to earn an Olympic berth. The top U.S. challenger will be determined at a competition in February. "This is a family affair," Diana says, "and if Steven does it again, that's a win for all of us. But this is what we want, this is our dream, this is something we've always wanted, and this is a perfect time for all of us to do it, while we're all young and still healthy." Brothers Edward, Richard and William Tritschler are the only three U.S. siblings to qualify for the same Summer Olympics in the same sport. They competed in gymnastics in 1904. The Lopezes already have reached a pinnacle together, all winning gold medals at the 2005 world championships. They celebrated with a get-together at their parents' home in Sugar Land, where Steven and Diana still live and where video games and poker cards always are at the ready to feed the siblings' constant urge to compete with each other. "It was just amazing," Steven says of the worlds sweep. "It was the feeling like I had after I won my first Olympic Games or after winning my first world championships." He is so eager to experience that feeling again in Beijing that in the past two months he's made helping Mark and Diana for this weekend's competition his priority. "I would probably be out somewhere in the Caribbean, soaking in the rays somewhere. That's what I would love to be doing," he says. Instead, he's been reporting to the gym every day, sparring with Mark and spurring on Diana. "We push each other, and we're there for each other," Diana says. "If one of us has a bad day, the others push that person. I don't think any of us can do it without the others' support." It's a family tradition begun by Jean, who set his own competitive career aside to focus on training his brothers and sister in taekwondo. Jean medaled in more than 30 national and international competitions in the 1990s, before taekwondo was an Olympic sport. Taekwondo was added to the Olympic program in 2000. "I think that the luxury he had," Jean says of Steven, a four-time world champion, "vs. the lack of luxury that I had was the fact that he could lean on me for everything and just be so focused and so driven on success and not having to worry about anything else that dealt with the sport." Although they've had their tensions as coach and student, and as brothers, Steven appreciated Jean's sacrifices and assistance and sees it as an example to follow. "It's how it goes," Steven says. "It's how we've been raised. I stand on Jean's shoulders, Mark stands on mine and Diana stands on his. I think that's the natural evolution of things. Each generation should get better." As winners at the U.S. Olympic trials in August, Mark and Diana had the chance to qualify outright for Beijing along with Steven at a competition in Manchester, England, in September. They needed a top-three finish there as well, but they both lost in the quarterfinals. Now they're trying to prevent a repeat of the 2004 Summer Olympics, when they watched from the stands as Steven won his second Olympic gold medal. "Of course, it's a great opportunity for me to be with my brother and to have that Olympic taste and Olympic experience," Mark says. "But I was at the same time upset because I wasn't able to compete alongside him when I knew I could easily win a gold medal there and I deserved to be on that team with him. But I swallowed my pride and I put that aside and I was there for him 100%." Steven is now there 100% for his younger siblings, trying to push and pull them toward what would be an amazing family accomplishment. "I've been to the Olympics, but to be able to experience that with Mark and Diana," he says, "that's a fairy tale, really." --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2007 08:01:22 -0800 (PST) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] KMA....truth vs lies Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net So I was reading about some Korean martial arts like kuk sool won and came across the following: "Other Perspectives on the Source of Kuk Sool Over the years differing versions of the sources of Kuk Sool have emerged. Early sources presenting conflicting information on the source of this material include the writings of then Kuk Sool representative Kimm He-Young, the early statements of Seo In-Sun,[1] and the early writings of Suh himself, which present versions of events inconsistent with his later writings. The first red Kuk Sool book published by Suh In-Hyuk never mentions his grandfather, who died when Suh was 12 years old, as a source for Royal Court Martial Arts which he studied. This fact was not mentioned until published in Suh and Jane Hallander's "Fighting Weapons of Korean Martial Arts" in 1988. In Kimm He-Young's "Kuk Sool” it is written: "While compiling Kuk Sool techniques, he (Myung-Duk Suh) taught these arts to his grandson, In-hyuk Suh. Before the old master died in 1952, he handed down five compiled books of Kuk Sool to the young master Suh. They are: (1) Yu Sool; (2) Kwon Sool; (3) Yu Kwon Sool; (4) Whal Bub; (5) Hyul Bub. "After his grandfather died, the young master searched other aspects of Korean Traditional Martial Arts for the next eight years from many other masters. These are some of the masters he studied under: "1. Master Choi Yong-Sul: The young master visited many private martial arts schools and villages to study Tribal Martial Arts or private martial arts. One of the influencial [sic] in this area is master Yong-sool Choi. From master Choi, he received further education in Yu Sool. "2. Hai Dong Seu Nim (The Great Monk of the East Sea): In order to learn Buddhist Martial Arts, the young master visited many temples throughout the country. One of his great teachers was Hai Dong Seu Nim. From this great monk, he learned Kwon Sool, Ki Bub (Ki Exercise) and breathing techniques. "3. Master Tai-eui Wang: The young master also visited old masters of Royal Court Martial Arts. One of his teachers of this art was Master Tai-eui Wang. From master Wang, he learned Yu Kwon Sool" Also according to Suh in the Kuk Sool Won Textbook: Volume 1 (Suh 1993:33) "Another of Master Suh's influential teachers was Yong Sool Choi, the founder of Korean Hapkido and a master of Korean tribal martial arts, as well." Oddly, Choi Yong-Sul never claimed to have studied native Korean "tribal arts" himself but rather claimed to have studied the Japanese system of Daito-ryu aikijujutsu having lived in Japan from age 8 to 42 during the Japanese colonial period. (1911-1945) Interestingly Choi Yong Sul and his students often referred to his art in its early years as yu sool (jujutsu) or yu kwon sool before settling on the name hapkido for the art.[2] [3] Suh is also known to have had associations with members of Kim Moo Hong's Shin Moo Kwan hapkido school in Seoul[2] , especially with people like Kim Woo Tak and other senior members who founded the Kuk Sool Kwan school of hapkido, predating Suh's own efforts" --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? A top-three finish is needed to qualify. Attempting to qualify the female fin/fly class on Saturday will be Charlotte Craig (Murrieta, Calif.). On Sunday, Mark Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) and Diana Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) will try to qualify the male and female bantam/feather divisions, respectively. Should Craig, Mark Lopez or Diana Lopez qualify their weight divisions this weekend, they will then face a top U.S. challenger in April for the individual spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. The challenger will be determined at an Olympic Trials Fight-Off in February, from the pool of original Olympic Trials qualifiers. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2007 16:09:56 -0800 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] USAT Dan program Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Apply Today For Your Own USAT Black Belt Certificate December 5, 2007 USA Taekwondo wants to recognize your skills and accomplishments by awarding you with an official black belt certificate!
