Grant for MA (The_Dojang) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2007 08:16:00 -0800 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Grant for MA Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Police chief seeks grant for martial arts TONY SPINELLI BRIDGEPORT — Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood loves martial arts, and he wants to share those skills and discipline with eighth- graders in city schools. "It can help you achieve anything you want," Norwood told hundreds of seventh- and eighth-graders gathered for a martial-arts demonstration last Friday at Luis Munoz Marin School. Norwood is working to secure a grant to fund tuition for 30 students from city schools to attend martial-arts classes five days a week, after school, in January. The classes would be taught by Master Jong Hun Lee, the police chief's tae kwon do instructor, who plans to open an academy in downtown Bridgeport next month. Norwood invited Lee, of J. Lee's School of Martial Arts in Madison, to demonstrate some moves Friday for the kids as a way to generate excitement for the classes. The demonstration was a carpenter's nightmare: Lee and his students broke a lot of boards with their power jumps and spinning kicks. Lee also demonstrated some throws and holds, including jumping leg scissors moves that seemed to have been borrowed from professional wrestling. "This is mixed martial arts," Lee said of the skills he was demonstrating, including tae kwon do. Fighting isn't the point, he said. The goal is to learn respect for others and for one's self through the discipline of training. "Students can learn to love themselves better," Lee said. Lee, 36, who has a fifth-degree black belt, demonstrated defensive moves under attack from his 31-year-old brother, Jung Hwak Lee, who holds a third-degree black belt. Some of the students were ready to sign up on the spot. "I'd like to learn different defense styles," said Raheem Slowley, 14. Francisca Rodriguez, 15, said she studied karate when she was younger, but was inspired to do it again. Norwood brought his board-cracking entourage to two other schools Friday morning, as well, hoping to build interest in the program from students around the city. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
