My own feeling is that the NK version will be absorbed by the WTF. It may have an independent nature for a while but I suspect is will just be another kwan. GM Choi's ITF seems to be slowly slipping away. He has lost many of his strongest supporters from around the world. It seemed pretty clear when I visited the ITF-V group's world champs this spring that they weren't much interested in that group. I really watched the ITF-V group function during their congress meeting and world champs. A lot has changed from the old days of Gen. Choi running things as a one man show. One of the ITF board memebers summed it up for me: "You see Mr. Martin, we have done away with one man rule. Now there are six of us but at least we must agree on what we do." It will be interesting to see how Grand Master Sereff and the USTF fits in to things here in the US and elsewhere. Depending on how many USTF instructors opt to apply for ITF instructors plaques they could be come a force as that number determins how many votes a country has. My own school just sent in applications for 11 -- and that is only for our senior instructing group. Fun times! Unbiased? Heck no. :-) It would take an external person (like a journalist) to do that. I can give you my biased-but-I'll-try-to be-fair opinion, though. :-) > It seems the NK ITF has the closer tie with the WTF, yes? Is the NK > ITF also the largest of the three ITFs? Did a majority of the more > senior ITF Masters end up in Master Choi's org or NK or Vienna? The NK group does have close ties with the WTF; you all may remember a certain major scandal a few years back about WTF President Un Yong Kim funnelling a bunch of $$$ to the North Koreans by way of "ITF President" Chang Ung. I have my doubts about Mr. Ung's sincerity. I also have my doubts (aired extensively in this forum a long time ago) about the "reunification" of TKD (you might as well try to 'reunite' TKD and Shao-Lin Kungfu, we're just not talking about the same thing). It seems (despite what's up on the NK web site) that the Vienese courts are generally siding with the Vienna group (under Master Tran); I think every ruling has gone against NK except one that is under appeal. I don't really know about the relative sizes. A lot of the ITF Masters were in the NG group at first, but have left since then (notably GM Hwang). From where I sit (in the Vienna group) it looks like we're attracting people from the other organizations (or, more commonly, from limbo) but I have a very limited view of this from Northern Colorado. :-) We were under GM Hwang when the General died, so we were (briefly) affiliated with the NG group. Our various jobs did not allow us to remain in a group with that leadership (among other issues, Master Roena is a Denver County Sheriff). We left and joined the Canada group, as a part of Master Fabian Nunez' ATFI group. Shortly thereafter, the ATFI pulled out of the Canada group and joined Vienna. We were not with GM Choi for very long, but we had no problems with him at all (the move was... well, it's a long story). I can say without reservation that the Vienna group has its act together. We are very impressed with President Tran and the people has working with him, and are happy to be where we are. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Dave Steffen, Ph.D. Wave after wave will flow with the tide V Dan, ITF And bury the world as it does Tide after tide will flow and recede tkd-physics@comcast.net Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. McBride, II "When did the rulers of Silla Korea become kings?" Open to all, the Fulbright Forum serves as a periodic gathering for the Fulbright Family at large, including past and present grantees and friends of Fulbright. This month's Forum will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 25^th in the 6^th floor conference room at the KAEC Building in Mapo-gu, Seoul, with a snack reception to follow in the 3^rd floor administrative offices. For maps and directions, see the KAEC website at www.fulbright.or.kr . Summary: The early sixth century was period of seminal change and development with respect to the concept of kingship and systems of government in Silla Korea. The concept of royal authority underwent whole scale reform during the reigns of Chiju(ng (500--514) and Po(phu(ng (514--540). The inscriptions on two steles discovered in North Kyo(ngsang province in 1988 and 1989 well reflect the changing appearance of kingship in the early sixth century and have caused historians of Silla to rethink the nature of Silla's ruling structure and the process by which Silla rulers adopted Sinitic statecraft and became Chinese-style kings. This is because the adoption of the term /wang/ (king) suggests a fundamental change in the topology of royal authority---it is not just a formalistic change to a Chinese-style reign title. Before the discovery of these steles, scholars relied almost exclusively on Kim Pusik's (1075--1151) narrative in the /History of the Three Kingdoms/ (/Samguk sagi/), which says that Chiju(ng discarded the native term /maripkan/ for /wang/ in the tenth month of 503. These inscriptions, however, provide greater nuance to our understanding of how native Silla terms and conceptions of authority and rule continued well into the rule of Po(phu(ng. Biography: Richard D. McBride, II earned a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultures at UCLA in 2001. He has taught at the University of Iowa, Pomona College, and Washington University in St. Louis. He is currently a Fulbright Senior Researcher studying the development of kingship and royal authority in Silla Korea. He is the author of /Domesticating the Dharma: Buddhist Cults and the Hwao(m Synthesis in Silla Korea/ (University of Hawai'i Press, 2008) and several articles on medieval Chinese and Korean Buddhism, the /Samguk yusa/, and the /Hwarang segi/ manuscripts. His second book, entitled /Aspiring to Enlightenment: Pure Land Buddhism in Silla Korea/, is being prepared for publication. __________________ Korean-American Educational Commission Fulbright Building 168-15 Yonmni-dong Mapo-gu Seoul 121-874 www.fulbright.or.kr --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
