"Four Taiwan athletes have qualified for the Beijing Olympic Games. We will hire Europeans and South Koreans to be training partners for the four," coach Hou Wei-hsing said. "The purpose is to intensify the training and to let them adapt to foreign players' tactics," he added. Hou said cited the example of Taiwan's taekwondo champion Chu Mu-yen, a 2004 Olympic champion who has won many tournaments with him rapid-fire kicks and triple kicks. "After Chu won gold at the Athens Olympics, Chu's hallmark fly kicks are copied by players around the world, especially in Europe. So we have to hire European and South Korean players to let our players get used to different tactics," he said. Taiwan won two golds and two bronzes in taekwondo at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Chu Mu-yen beat Mexican Oscar Salazar 5-1 to win gold in the men's under-58kg category, while Chen Shih-hsin took the women's under-49kg flyweight final. Chu is one of the four Taiwan players who have qualified for the Beijing Olympics. Taiwan taekwondo athletes are undergoing intensive pre-Olympic training at the National Sports Training Centre in Kaohsiung, south Taiwan. Taiwan hopes to win at least seven golds at the Beijing Olympics and taekwondo is Taiwan's best hope for gold. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 13:11:16 -0800 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Wrongdoing? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Taekwondo federation official denies wrongdoing and vows to clear name SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - A senior official of the World Taekwondo Federation denied Thursday that he committed any wrongdoing when he offered an envelope of cash to an IOC member. WTF secretary-general Jin-suk Yang said he would seek to prove his innocence when he appears before the International Olympic Committee ethics commission. Yang offered an envelope with US$10,000 to WTF vice president Nat Indrapana, who is also an IOC member from Thailand, at a federation meeting in November in Manchester, England, according to reports in the South Korean media and the German-based Sport Intern news letter. The reports have described the offer as an alleged bribery attempt. «The press reports are different from the truth,» Yang said at a news conference. «I will stake my honor to prove the truth. Without mentioning Indrapana by name, Yang said he offered an IOC member some money to buy clothes and other necessities after the official lost his suitcase at the Manchester airport. He said the member did not accept the money. «I did it out of a pure intention to help him not feel inconvenienced after losing his suitcase,» Yang said. «If I had the intent to gain something, then it would constitute a bribe. However, there was no motive. I am appalled that my innocent attempt to help someone in the situation is thrown back at me like this. Yang denied the amount was US$10,000, but did not say how much he offered. Yang said he has evidence that the money was not a bribe, and a third person who was at the scene can back him up. The WTF, meanwhile, said it would «respond vigorously against the malignant forces to prove the truth. Yang's case has been referred to the IOC ethics commission in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Yang is expected to appear at a hearing this month. IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said the panel is likely to make recommendations to the ruling IOC executive board at its next meeting in Beijing in April. Taekwondo has been an Olympic sport since the 2000 Sydney Games. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
