Even if you have a panel of your own, there is always the possibility that some will think you influenced same. On the positive side what encouragement and pride you will instill in your son if he is recognized by the person that taught you. It might be more special for him to be tested by you, rather than your instructor. When my wife was eligible for 1st dahn, my instructor offered to test her. That would have been fine with me, but my wife wanted to test under the other upper dahn instructors who had helped to work with her over the years. She also wanted to share the experience with the students in our school, whom she was close to. As a result, she was tested in our school. I sat on the panel, but offered no input during the test, or the deliberations. She earned her belt in front of those whose opinions mattered most to her. I think it would also be fine to have your son test under your instructor. You didn't say what the testing fee is, and that might be a consideration, but if it's under a couple hundred dollars, it might be worth it to take the potential perception of nepotism out of the situation. Another question is whether you can be impartial on his test. I assume you could, but if not, having someone else test him might be better for you. That way you could watch his test as his mother, without the stress of running the testing. I would talk to your son, and see what he wants. After all, it's his testing, and he'll remember this for the rest of his life. Either way, best of luck to him! Sincerely, Jeff Yeagley Academy of Fighting Arts http://www.WeTrainHarder.com "I have an 11 yr old son who has been studying TKD for a good five and a half years. He has the ability and knowledge to test for his first dan. I am his instructor. Because I did not want my son feeling like his belt was a "GIVE ME" 'cause his mom was the instructor, I arranged my instructor to test him in his next regular testing cycle. That way no one thinks I gave him the belt, and more importantly my son knows he earned the belt because he rarely sees my instructor and that will give him more of a true testing experience of added pressure to perform. My instructor wants to charge us his regular testing fee (which I think is fine), my husband doesn't want to have my instructor test him when it is something I can do. He says why pay him for something we can do. I say we pay him and have him test there because it is a mental thing for my son to "know". Am I wrong? Should we test him our selves. My concern is the integrity of the black belt. Physically and mentally. I care about my son knowing he earned the belt and it wasn't a give me. I want him to know he raised to the challenge. Am I being overly critical or should we send him to test. I don't' expect anyone out there to settle things between my husband and I, but we would like to hear your experiences and if you feel it is right/wrong to test family members. This way my husband and I can discuss your responses and do what is best for our son. Why didn't they do groundwork as part of the fight? And didn't the big guy say "dojo"? -----Original Message----- From: Ray [mailto:rterry@idiom.com] Sent: Saturday, February 09, 2008 12:00 PM To: The_Dojang Subject: [The_Dojang] Fight Quest Finally got to view the Fight Quest episode on Hapkido. Great to see Master Kim's Seoul dojang again. I was only there a few times, but it looks like things haven't changed too much. And to finally see Master Bae. We emailed a few times back when the KHF was having serious probems with the "chubby grandmaster wannabe from down Florida way". Over all a good episode. And great to see John in the credits. I saw sons, daughters, & wives of instructors receive rank. And boy did they deserve those ranks! If you demonstrate exemplary integrity at your dojang for your students, what is the big deal on testing anyone. A test is a test. The only reason someone might question the given rank is if the student doesn't deserve it. It would seem to me that to have the test done by someone else would display a lack of self-trust to students. Who's the Master??? You are!!! (or for you MA movie buffs....." Sho-nuff!!!" In my case, I test my son, wife, niece and sister. When they achieve Dan ranks, I will call in some masters I respect...which incidentally I will do for any BB test. For every panel I have been on, the family members seemed to have enough pressure to perform. It is probably fairly hard to be the master's kid/wife/husband---whatever. My wife says she felt an overwhelming pressure to out-perform other testers so as not to leave the impression that she was getting the belt 'cause she sleeps with the boss.....lol. Well, I'm off to watch 'the last dragon' for the 9000th time......Who's the master?? Sho Nuff! However, despite that, I agree with you on having your instructor test him instead of doing the job yourselves. After all of the time you and your son invested, it is a small cost to ensure NO ONE can give him a hard time about mom "giving" him a black belt. At his age, it will be a hard enough thing to deal with in any case. Whatever you decide... best of luck :) PS, sorry about the spelling errors on my last post folks. Pritchett) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net BJ: If you think that your son would be more objectively evaluated by your instructor, or at least disspell the potential for folks thinking he got his rank through nepotism, then I think you are more than justified in having your instructor test him. I am my wife's primary instructor, but I generally have my instructor or peers evaluate and sign off of her promotion tests. Others may not realize that she is actually evaluated at a higher level due to our relationship. Regardless of what anyone else thinks, if your son meets the criteria for dan rank, then he meets it. I do understand that there will always be some folks assuming [right or wrong] that it was a "GIVE ME" due to your relationship. I personally would do what you intend to do, all the while understanding your husband's confidence in your ability to evaluate your son. Tough call. The best deal out there seems to be through a student's wholesale account at home depot. Since I'm spending some money on this, I want to avoid some pitfalls you all might have experienced. What size / height do you recommend, height off the floor, backing, support etc.?????" mc reply Mark, I would recommend a 3' high mirror about 3' above the floor. Standing back far enough to see yourself do a form even the 6' + crowd can see their entire body. Be prepared for hand prints all over the mirror between 4' and 5' and breath clouds if you teach children :-) I heard some horror stories about mirrors falling off the wall when using screws and brackets. At my old school I zig-zagged liquid nails all across the back of the mirror and used a frame to hold the mirror in place until the liquid nails set. congrads on the upgradde! mc --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Dcuster52@wmconnect.com Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2008 15:47:51 EST Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Testing Your Own Child To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I would reccomend having your instructor test your son. It is hard enough just training family members or close friends without some sort of problems arising somewhere down the road. I like having my students tested by someone else just to get a different view of what they look like. Let's face it, when we have a student test then we are really having our teaching ability tested. If you do the testing yourself then you are only seeing the same thing that you see every class. I test my students through the colored belt ranks but for their Black Belt ranks I take them to my instructor,Grandmaster Rudy Timmerman. That way if I have three students testing and all three are doing the same thing wrong it is most likely something that I am teaching wrong or simply missing. If I have only one person testing we discuss why he is doing whatever is wrong and we can usually trace the problems back to root and attempt to correct it. At any rate I can see no possible problem by having your instructor test your son but if you test him there is at least some potentual for problems.
