We had the Korean news on while playing a new game with Cosette and saw the report come on. It was very sad to see it burn. I have fond memories of seeing it. It was always impressive when you went by. To know that it may have been arson makes it even worse. Dear Korean-Studies list: Those of you not in Korea may not yet be aware that last night (Sunday, 10 February), Sungnyemun (Namdaemun), National Treasure #1, in Seoul burned down. The entire two-storey wooden superstructure collapsed, and all that remains is the stone foundation. A terrible loss to Korea. The historic structure from the Joseon Kingdom was totally demolished four hours after it caught fire at 8:30 p.m. Firefighters stopped operation at 10: 30 p.m. as the blaze appeared to be extinguished but it flared up again some minutes later, spreading quickly beyond control. About 30 fire trucks along with 90 firefighters rushed to the scene to bring the blaze under control. There were no reports of any casualties and the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, they said. Police suspect someone deliberately started the fire as a taxi driver, identified only by his surname Lee, said he saw a man in his 50s go up the stairs of the gate with a shopping bag, while he was waiting to pick up a customer in the nearby area. Lee said he then saw a spark like a firework and reported it to police, adding the man came down the stairs afterwards. The taxi driver said he drove around looking for the man but could not find him. About 40 police officers were dispatched to the scene and questioned eyewitnesses to identify the cause of the blaze. Also, some roads were blocked to traffic as firefighters put out the fire. Namdaemun, the oldest wooden structure in Seoul, was originally built in 1398 and then renovated in 1962, following its destruction during the Korean War. It was given the status of National Treasure No. 1. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Kevin Janisse" To: Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2008 21:34:03 -0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Testing your own family Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This past year I tested both my wife for third Dahn and son for first dahn. (Mark G. was invited to sit on my testing panel….thank again Mark----Last Dragon…cool movie!). I invited several other high ranking official to get their professional opinion because I felt I may be too hard on my wife and son. They assist in running the school and I expect a higher degree of performance than others. My son ended up passing but my wife failed, not because of performance but because she broke her foot 3-1/2 hours into the test. She ended up testing again three months later and passing. They both had an option to test in front of Grandmaster Timmerman but they both elected not too and I was not going to force them to because I honestly did not want to deal with the issue at home…..lol. They have both tested in front of GM Timmerman in the past and it is a good experience to have. It also in important that they fell comfortable testing in front of their teacher but for the understanding that they must pass your criterira and show the rest of the school you/they are confident in your own judgment and ability. One of the proudest moments in my life was wrapping a black belt around my sons waist after over 7 years of teaching him…..What a blast! I hope one day I will be able to award a Masters Degree to both of them. Sincerely, Kevin Janisse No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. EXACTLY! We are too hard on our family members! We unfairly expect them to tow a higher line. I too sit on the panel but make no input on family members. Secondly, the fact that he will remember his test for the rest of his live is VERY TRUE. I can remember every moment of mine and it's been 25 years. It MUST be above ALL reproach! He must KNOW it's real. If there is an inkling of doubt, in anyone's mind, that you would be impartial on your son's test, step aside and let someone else officiate. Thirdly, money is not the issue. -the belief that he EARNED his rank is. Make THAT the target in your decision. After all that, congratulations on being a good mother. I am both a Master in Tang Soo Do and a Sensei in Okinawan Goju Ryu. I change uniforms, titles and languages for each class/style that I teach. I am Sensei to the Goju students and Master Locke to the TSD students. My students know the difference and can keep the terms straight. I have never heard of a TKD master using just the term sensei, but I have heard of TKD schools letting students use "Karate" terms, ie dojo, gi, etc, simply b/c it is easier than correcting them. These are usually schools that use very little if any korean terms in their curriculum. There is an amount of influence with members of the same dojang in on the test. I think having your instructor there would keep it above board and at the same time make it memorable for your son and for everyone else. I have noticed this from a while back....things that have helped me involve the fact that most of the guys I have now have grappled,, either in the NHB competitions in the early 90's, and they are accustomed to Judo and wrestling,, we do quite a bit of groundwork at our school...the idea behind part of our dojang being called Green Dragon Hapkido Dojang is that the word Green indicates the "ground", and part of the Dragon conotation involves how a dragon is very flexible and able to move and release itself like a snake....there is more to it than this but this is probably enough said... for me...coming from an old wrestling/judo background from the 60's and 70's I have always tried to teach that the technique doesn't end when the person hits the ground...one thing that helps is say you take down someone with an outward wrist break.. or the elbow lock you are talking about.....when they hit the ground you don't force them straight into a follow up....you kind of let the person do their wiggle and counter roll as you keep a firm but flexible grip on their arm...once they commit then you snap whatever technique on them that they are close to.... the thing with grappling is just like using weapons...the more you practice it the more you understand what does and doesn't work..if you are doing a takedown and the person tries countering then you have to flow to another technique....easier done then said sometimes... the other thing that really helped me with counters to my techniques was working out and learning from Ji Han Jae.....the one thing that he has that is priceless is the ablility to fix your basics of movement so that a lot of the counter techniques simply won't work....he has a way of moving where his body...including his arms and steps are very tight and sharp so when you transition from one movement to the next the slack time is gone and ends up creating a drag effect on your opponent so the counters don't have the time or slack to be activated....and quite impossible to explain on a keyboard....BUT...I know what you are talking about and I actually tell my upper students to try and roll and bend and wiggle and counter out of our techniques....it's really good for practice IMHO.... In addition to what the "purple wonder" mentioned I'd also say that Gm Ji also shows how to counter certain moves, throws, locks. One cannot just fixate on a single technique and assume it will work. Now, given that the opponent has been off-balanced, given that you are using proper body mechanics and directing his/her movement, etc, the technique -should- work. But what if your foot slips during the technique? What if you suddenly see a second attacker coming and the technique you are about to do will put you in a bad postion wrt that in-coming threat? We also need to be able to flow from one technique into another, into another... Just more fun stuff to think about and practice.
