I recently attended the International Referee Seminar in LA and it was a great experience. The USTF is creating an atmosphere of excitement and fellow ship that I have complained was lacking for many years. I have always believed in the traditional martial art values of TKD being the most important part and benefit of what we have to offer to the community especially disadvantaged and at risk youth. The Olympics is a fine thing but a commercial enterprise regardless of what they paint on it. It has sickened me for years to listen to media and commentators actually write off people because they received a silver or bronze medal as if insignificant compared to first place or Gold. This mentality has led to a watering down of the original true full contact fighting in pursuit of just that one point lead which is boring is boring to watch and has fostered spoiled athletes whining in protest over ruling's and judging. This goes against the basic values of Traditional Martial Arts, that effort is its own reward and that doing your best, learning from each experience win or loose is a positive step forward to education and self respect as well as others including those in authority. This process and set of values is critical to imprinting life skills that will create future leaders and a better society from today's youth. The new direction that the USTF is leading in cooperation with the WTF and Kukkiwon to focus on these values will help today's instructors meet the needs of their students and become a vital resource to the community. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. We have a YMCA across the street from us and they offer Taekwondo for less than half than we do. Still not really competition because he can only get the space two nights a week and it's for all ages (4-60) and all ranks. So you may have a 4 year old white belt in the same class as a 60 year old green belt. And if they (the management of the YMCA) needs to use the space, they may shuffle you around. Would I do it as a start-up? Sure. IF I could get a big enough room, pay by the head, and guaranteed times. Otherwise, you may want to consider a community center or even a local gym. Best of luck to ya! Most of these centers have their own liability insurance that will cover what you want to do but you will have to review their policy on activities and procedures. You may have to sign a contract. Most will not charge for the facility and pay you a fee by the hour if you are not charging. They may also be willing to invest in wave master's, safety equipment and other training equipment. You should have a solid association or Grand master sponsoring your activities for creditability and educational resources. Non-profit centers are very good ways to build permanent membership at your full time DoJang location. Require your junior belts to start new classes this way if they want to advance in rank. By teaching short two day a week classes at different locations you can give people a taste and those who are serious about wanting more will attend longer more advanced classes at your other location. You can also supplement your income in these locations by selling uniforms and personal equipment. The disadvantage to all of this is time schedule of what days and times you can get and control of the room. You may not be able to control noise or other negative distractions as well as interruptions to schedule because of events and not being able to put up any art work or other material. Forget Health clubs most are very paranoid of liability and god forbid you might give any advice on health or diet. There are of course exceptions but this is generally the rule. You can purchase $ 2 million in liability insurance for about $400 starting for 30 students for a small down payment and so much per month for 9 months. Remember that if you have a problem and you wind up having 100 students and have not increased your coverage you will have no coverage at all. Also the center will likely have a registration waiver form that each student must sign and if they do not or you are using your own insurance you need to develop one that protects you personally and your organization and you can make that stick for all activities at all locations. You need to have access or supply good first aid supplies and be educated in Bodily Fluids abatement in this age of HIV and Hepatitis. If you are not then go to the local public health clinic and they will give you what you need and some may even require CPR or first aid card but that is generally covered by staff on hand. I have gone every year since 2002, and every year it just keeps getting more and more crowded. This year was the first time I didn’t have any time to check out most of the event since it was the first time I competed in an event. However, from a competitors viewpoint I can honestly say that I had a great time. The event itself has gotten too big, I think, and they need to figure out some way to deal with that. Also, from a participants view, they really need to do something about a) a better job of scheduling and b) a better job with giving the competitors some space to put their gear, change, and warm up. Two years ago the event was split between the convention center and the arena and that did wonders to alleviate the crowding. Now the ufc has an event at the arena on that weekend. I guess anyone that goes just has to deal with it. -----Original Message----- From: pathwayma@charter.net [mailto:pathwayma@charter.net] Sent: Monday, March 03, 2008 6:32 PM To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Arnold's Martial Arts Festival in Columbus Ohio I was convinced by a close friend to attend the Arnold Martial Arts Festival in Columbus Ohio this past weekend and was wondering if anyone else attended this event. This is great news!!! I have missed USTU something terrible. I was disheartened during the first year of USAT with the qualifying tournaments and the nationals. Nationals were not the same when states were no longer recognized and poomses weren't even qualifying events. Attitudes were unbearable among the officials. Even more so, we didn't see any Korean masters & grandmasters at the event. Quite frankly I didn't like anything at the event. I have never liked AAU.. And I would not join either one of those organization (USA Taekwondo or AAUU) much less order belt certificates from USAT. So will you please get me more info. Is there a website for the World Hanmadang. I know some things about the Hanmadang competitions as they have had some in Dallas. Our students will from now on start competing in these. We use to compete every year in USTU. It was a sad day when USTU was no longer there and competition and tournaments just were not the way it should be. We also are Kukkiwon certified and we are under our Korean master- Grandmaster Song Chol. Looking forward to hearing from you. At the seminar I was able to meet some very bright people with some perspectives of knowledge of whom and what was going on that I had not known before. This is the first time I have felt it worth while to come out from such a remote location at such great cost. My plane fare was close to $1,400 but well worth it and I made some critical networking with other Grand Master's to support reaching remote villages in my area for a long range TKD instruction plan that could add as many as 800 new students but more importantly could change the lives in 15 village communities and this is my opinion should be the purpose of and direction of Tae Kwon Do today. It was so exciting to feel the warmth and happy greetings from all the visiting 8th and 9th Dan grand masters who were not just officiating, or standing on the side lines but working out right along side us enthused with a gleam in their eyes. Every where you went, the lobby, the elevator, the hallways even the bathroom you were greeted, there were smiles and hand shakes. People were renewing old friendships and creating new ones. The instruction for the Hanmadang was thorough and at times complex compared to a traditional State or National tournament. The one thing that struck me was the effort to unify the Kwan's in teaching how to judge fairly but also the official Kukkiwon position on how the forms should be done. I found for the most part our NW Black Belt Association has been on track 95%. There were some very minor changes to stances which I would encourage any of you who intend to compete in July to talk to a Referee to explain the judging on PoomSe scoring so you can tailor you individual and team training to that format. My feeling is that the World Hanmadang will be a format to developing the new State and National USTF Tae Kwon Do tournaments in the years to follow. This makes good business sense. This type of tournament is more inclusive and attracts a much broader base of competitors. Our North West Regional Tae Kwon Do association has been holding a financially successful tournament for over 30 years by making it a TKD and Open all styles tournament with creative forms, breaking, weapons and team competitions. The new Hanmadang format will improve this tournament and increase revenues for our State Association. The USTF will restore recognition of the Sate organizations which the USAT destroyed. Many of these organizations were in existence for decades and were the main body to create cooperation with in the states and to pool non-profit fund raising for sate and national teams. The issue which has been beat around since the USTF was organized and brought up again at the seminar of trying to replace the USAT as the NGB is a non issue in my opinion. Tae Kwon Do today is a Commercial Free Market Enterprise and the market will determine this not politics. If 95% of the 30 million practitioners feel they are getting what they need from the USTF that is where they will invest their time and money. I feel the failure of the USTU has been a priceless lesson to all and there exists a new humility in the USTF leadership with support from the WTF and Kukkiwon that was not their before. The USTF will restore respect and pride for Age and Rank. I am hoping that in time to suggest that the USTF in future years reissue new coaching and refereeing certificates to those that hold USTU certificates for a fee. This could be a great revenue source for the new organization and help to bring back many. I would like to see these certificates developed on high quality parchment paper with engravings, calligraphy and art work making them a full head above anything being created now by preprinted in the box stuff. These would set USTF Instructors, Master's and Grand Masters apart from other organizations. I for one would have no problem paying $100 or $200 each for such Art Work worth displaying the home or Do Jang. In time I think the USTF can supply us all with the best equipment, apparel, certificates, training and events in TKD history if we will be patient and help support them in any way we can. My Grand Master is the most senior 9th Dan In North and South America, his certificate is #20 issued by the Kukkiwon and it has been hard to watch how the demise of the USTU, and the USAT has treated him and many other senior GM's. He felt unimportant, useless and disrespected. I have seen a new excitement in him since the USTF was formed and since the announcement of the World Hanmadang being given to USTF and the referee seminar I feel his spirit has been recharge. His health concerns are very serious now so he was not able attend the seminar but he going to attend the tournament in July So I will be able to see him when I attend. I want to thank the USTF and Grand Master Sang Lee for not only bringing back what was lost but for taking us in a new direction that I believe will grow TKD even more by serving the 95% of practitioners who are not Olympic Stars. In my own small way I would like to encourage any Master or owner of a club that will join the USTF and attend the World Hanmadang to feel free to visit me in Nome and I can take you and your party out for crab or fish on our 42 foot fishing trawler for free in the summers. The Dojang here fishes to feed the Elders and hungry in the summer as community service. Roger Piarulli, president of the Federation Francaise de Taekwondo et Disciplines Associees, was recently appointed an honorary ambassador to promote Korea's tourism by the Korea Tourism Organization Tuesday. ``It is an honor, and I hope this will be a chance for me to promote Korean culture to France,'' Piarulli, a sixth dan taekwondo master, said after the appointment ceremony in Seoul. The 49-year-old former member of the French national team began doing the sport in 1970, when taekwondo was barely known in the European country, after he met a Vietnamese friend who practiced taekwondo. ``I fell in love with taekwondo. Since then, I have kept training it,'' he said. Piarulli said one of the merits of taekwondo is that those from all age groups can do it, adding the ages of his club members range from seven to 79. Amid taekwondo spreading around the world, the martial art is gaining popularity in France. ``There are more than 1,000 taekwondo clubs in France. The number of taekwondo trainees registered with the federation is 50,000, a rapid hike from 15,000 a decade ago. Also, 1,500 French people apply to Kukkiwon for grading tests every year,'' the president said. Kukkuwon is the world taekwondo headquarters in southern Seoul. Many taekwondo trainees visit Korea to learn the martial art and experience the culture of the country where taekwondo originated. Piarulli comes here two to three times per year with French martial artists. During this visit, he made a contract with KAL Hotel in Jeju Island to use the island as the training camp for the French taekwondo team in July before going to Beijing for the Olympic Games. The French federation has also tried to promote taekwondo to more people, developing the ``taekwondo dance'' and holding an event for the disabled. ``We designed the event for the handicapped to show that everyone can do taekwondo. We are encouraging the International Taekwondo Federation to adopt the sport as an event for the Paralympics,'' Piarulli said. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
