Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Local martial artists headed for Korea Ontario, Canada Four people from West Lorne are going to compete on the world stage in the World Martial Arts Tournament this week in Korea. Jim Kolar has been selected along with Chris Huver, Will Depater, and Garret Vanvugt to join with the rest of team Canada headed for Korea March 20 to compete against other nations in martial arts patterns, demonstrations and sparring. The local team members all train at Security Training Solutions under Jim Kolar. Three other people were selected to participate in the tournament, including Jim Kolar's daughter, but they had to withdraw for financial reasons. Each participant has to raise enough money for an overseas trip, estimated at $3,000 U.S per person to go. The team made efforts through fundraising to get them all to the tournament but ultimately fell short. Jim Kolar says he would have been willing to send his daughter over in his place, but the head of the National team, Gus Michalik didn't agree. "We didn't raise what were hoping to. But we did raise some money with the help of the community," said Kolar The team raised funds through donations, raffles, draws and two smash-a-thons held at the Wallacetown and Rodney Fairs where people could pay to swing a sledge hammer at donated cars. Kolar has been practicing martial arts for 23 years and is qualified in 9 different martial arts styles. He and the rest of his team are excited about representing Canada at the competition. He says the martial artists from Korea itself will likely be their biggest competetion. "Hap Ki Do is a Korean martial art. So it'd be like people coming to Canada for a hockey tournament," said Kolar. "In Korea, this is like the NHL playoffs. This will be televised and everything." This tournament is held every two years. Korea will probably have the largest representation of martial artists since they won't have to travel from other countries. Kolar hopes Team Canada can do even better this year than in the last tournament. "The team, being as small as it was, had good representation. We have a few more people this time so we're hoping to make a bigger impression," said Kolar Team Canada will be treated as special guests while visiting Korea. The team members will be given a special tour of the palace and the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea; places not normally visited by tourists. "We're going to get to go to an ancient temple that's actually got the oldest known martial arts artifacts in the world. It's like two and a half thousand years old," said Kolar. The dojo in West Lorne is one of the only ones in Canada were Hap Ki Do is taught. Jim and his wife Kate have recently established the National Hap Ki Do Association. This organization will spread awareness of this martial art across the country, and Jim hopes it will also help raise funds to assist in situations like this year's tournament. "We're hoping to build awareness of Hap Ki Do in Canada and be the governing body for that so when future tournaments come up like this one, we'll be the key contact for Canada to get people over there to do the competitions," he said. Jim says they are going to start raising funds for the next World Martial Arts Tournament now, so Canada can have an even larger representation in the future. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Doug" To: Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2008 23:12:57 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] 1st dan certificates Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net How long after completing one's 1st Dan testing is usual for one to actually receive his Black Belt and final testing in Hapkido?? Most of the time, student level belts, it would be a few weeks at most... For example, a fellow who received his black belt passed the test ( I was his gi), forgive my spelling and pls correct if the word is incorrect, and it took about a month for him to receive his embroidered black belt & his final testing scores and his certificate. For me now, it's been about at least 5 weeks (about the same amount of time or more) and the instructor still hasn't called. As you all probably suspect, I'm very anxious to get this certificate in my hands & be the proud owner of the embroidered black belt. Can I hear some of your stories about how long you all had to wait?? I suppose in Korea, there's no waiting.. but I really don't know if that's true or not. Thanks in advance for your input! And to also position it as the root of all/most Asian martial arts. For the most part you have always been informative and helpful. I have been told not to post on the DD which is only for low rank whiners who have nothing but negative ambitions for the new national TKD federation. Then I was kicked off the other list for requesting additional reasoning for why or how this would be helpful. I have had many good communications off line with many very educated and experienced Masters who read the DD. I do feel there is a silent majority who read rather than post and it is to those I like communicating with. The IR seminar brought many good people with like minded values to go back to the roots of traditional Tae Kwon Do as an art form not just a sports organization. It was exciting to see other Masters and Grand Masters with a gleam in their eyes dedicated to giving and sharing. Knowledge and help freely. The free exchange of ideas and information in an effort to serve the TKD community and provoke thoughts or motivations for others to participate should not be curtailed by negative turf wars and politics. There is a turf war on the horizon in sports TKD that is attempting to reestablish state organizations with delegates or presidents hand picked by the national sports authority. This would seem odd since the old or new state organizations in existence elected their representatives by majority vote. There is also an attempt to ask low rank black belts to go around their traditional Master or Grand Master to test directly with the national sports authority. It will be interesting to see how these pan out but I am glad me and my students have some thing better to do.
