I'm curious to know more. All I have heard about is 5 elements, as I mentioned below. I was also taught this 5 elemental theory comes from Chinese philosophy, though I was taught this by a native Korean. What more can you tell us about the philosophy of these 4 elements? For example: 5 elemental philosophy applies to our belt colors Metal = White Belt Earth = Yellow Belt Wood = Blue Belt Fire = Red Belt Water = Black Belt I was also taught that it applies to acupressure and the meridians of the body Metal = Lung & Large Intestine Earth = Spleen & Stomach Wood = Liver & Gall Bladder Fire = Heart & Small Intestine Water = Kidney & Urinary Bladder My knowledge about this acupressure theory is very simplistic, so please, no questions I'm sure there are more philosophical connections that I am not thinking of right now, and that I was never taught. Anyway, some additional education would be interesting. -Chris -- __--__-- > not from what I was taught....that doesn't mean it doesn't exist in other > venues....we practice: earth, water, fire, wind, and the last one is > "void"...which is more akin to zen training.... > > Michael Tomlinson > >> >> I was always taught there are five elements: metal, earth, wood, fire >> and water (I realize some cultures substitute wind). Michael Tomlinson > > No disrespect but I swear this same stuff is in Ashida Kim's books....lol. Bottomline the in a scenario like what you mentioned, aggresiveness means nothing. It's the mind that should stay calm and the body that moves fast. Aggresiveness that isn't controlled is linked to rage where your mind shuts down and overrides reason and you in essence get much closer to being an animal then typical. That's suitable for conan the barbarian, but for a martial artist? we train to be the opposite. > > Jye > _________________________________________________________________ More immediate than e-mail? I challenge anyone, anywhere, to sit on the floor, cross legged without moving and invoke a spirit to protect you from a kick to the face. In fact, make it a double dog dare! Personally the breathing thing makes a hell of a lot more sense than "invoking spirits." dave weller On Apr 3, 2008, at 7:48 PM, the_dojang- request@martialartsresource.net wrote: > Sure extra tools are great to have, as long as they truly exist.
