I couldn't watch the whole video because I was getting sea sick from all the bouncing and hand waving. I not going to say much, just that I agree, it's an embarrassment to TKD. Enough said, I'm a man of few words, this time, dinners on the table. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net To Master Dan, et al, I agree that the 'sport' aspect of TKD has eroded the public's perception of TKD as a legitimate 'martial' art. Discouraging hand techniques never made sense to me anyway - honestly, do you have better control of your hands or your kicks? And which has the greater power/possibility of inflicting injury? That aside, are two reasonably matched masters of a combat art going to just pummel each other until the match is over or one is KO'd? Or will they circle and observe their opponent, waiting and watching for that perfect moment to launch a 'killing' stroke to end the combat? I'd be interested in others' thoughts on this. pil seung, Don Ross --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2008 00:12:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] hapkido clips Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net http://www.natkd.com/hapkido_techniques.htm __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Choi's Encyclopedia describes the moves as "move the foot in a stamping motion", and "a W-shaped block" with only one outer forearm Back in the early '90s, our dojang did crescent kicks, landing in sitting stances, using a W-shaped block with both outer forearms. However, when I got to this tul, my crescent kicks were truly pathetic [and actually painful - 2 replacement hip joints and 4 fused vertibrae with instrumentation, aka steel rods - not making excuses, just facts.]. My Instructor told me to do a stamping kick instead, along with the W-shaped block with both forearms. A number of years later, our native Korean GM told us to teach it as stamping kicks [which makes more combat sense] , and that while the forearm block looks like a W-shaped block, in actuality, the 'block' on the pivoting leg side of the body is only a 'reaction' to aid the 'action' of the very hard outer forearm block of the other arm. I hope this makes sense, Sir. When I reread it, it's confusing to me! LOL. But walking through it may help. While this may not be the 'defintive' answer you seek, it is my experience offered freely. YMMV. I have no knowledge or experience re the WTF tuls. pil seung, Don Ross --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2008 06:38:26 -0700 (PDT) From: John Merwin To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] West Coast Poomsae Championships Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings Taekwondo Community, We are pleased to announce the online registration site is up and running for Tim Thackrey’s ‘West Coast Poomsae Championships’ in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, May 10, 2008. They wanted to know where are the power punches. A young Master half my age once hit me so hard in the solar plexus even with a chest protector on, that it knocked me out and I believe it was endless hours of sparring against kicks that patterned me to not be prepared for fist attack, that was a lesson I have never forgotten. I am convinced that if judging a solid punch earned a consistent point or knock down that the TKD practitioners whose school promoted the use of hands would dominate tournaments IMHO TKD sparring even at its highest level has become snoring at best. When I coached and reffed in the 90's everyone complained when a competitor got knocked out demanding rule changes. I truly believe I have seen more knock outs and injuries at league soccer, lacrosse, football and baseball then in all sparring combined in the last 30 years. There is nothing wrong with competition in Martial Arts make sure your students know the difference between sport MA and real life applications. I always explain that before a real fight starts you will never hear the words "sparring joon be, she jak" "goman" Mark -----Original Message----- From: dan scholten [mailto:masterdan@gci.net] Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2008 5:52 PM To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Master Dan Nia Robbed??? Sad... ============================================================== It is very true that at the elite level almost zero points are scored via hand techniques. In the WTF Magazine about a year or so ago they published a study of points by technique, at elite level events. In that study they encountered ZERO points by hand technique. (see issue v05.n398 for details) However, eleven months ago I was at the Pan-Am TKD Champs in Lima, Peru, (just to watch) and actually saw a hand technique score!!! A USA teammate scored with a reverse punch to the center of the hoju and the opponent went down, boom! They were using electronic scoring and nothing was showing!?! Some of the officials that happened to be watching that match quickly interrupted to inquire as to what-the-hell was going on, a point finally showed up on the monitor.
