If you wore it you were considered excuse the expression (chicken). We did wear a hogue when going full contact and sometimes head protection (boxing headgear). the hogue contained bamboo slates and after going a round or two your hands would know it. I sometimes think we were a different breed back then. How we did it was the sparring practice was after a 60 to 90 min class, since you were good and warm by then. Then we'd put on the hogu and spar full-contact for another 45 mins. Headgear wasn't required yet, so no one had any. Three to four days a week. No wonder I was way thinner back then... It is time for me to renew my Yellow pages ad, which constitutes the majority of my advertising budget. What are your thoughts on the validity of the Yellow Pages book as an advertising source? Should I renew as is, or downsize and redirect some of my ad revenue? --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 09:06:02 -0800 From: dan scholten To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Master Dan punchin and Oyama Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Punching: First it's not punching to the head that is needed. Mas Oyama was a cousin to my instructor and I used to get free Sushi when I was young for telling stories of him that were told to me by my instructor. Oyama did not kill bulls by punching them in the head but punched to the heart. He would spend days in the woods killing trees by punching the bark off all they way around so the trees could not get the sap they needed for nutrition. Also it was always told to me that in days past positions of leadership in Korea were decided by sparring. Lawyers were called men of letters and when they were elected by other means the country did not run as well. The Shotokan sparring I witnessed that did allow points to the head was considered light contact not full contact. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Gordon Okerstrom" To: Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 12:47:36 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Mas Oyama Lore Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dan Scholten posted: Cool! Those that settled things by fighting were considered lower class.
