You Tube Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Perception is equal to reality. The perception that Tae Kwon Do is only for kids was created by the worship of only sport TKD and the Olympics over the traditional martial art. This process started decades ago but was very evident at competition levels in the 90's. I was very excited about the effect of Ring Master on the quality of competition and participation of the spectators. This system combined with the 7-12 rule created a whole new mind set on more aggressive sparring. It was a lot more fun and exciting to be a corner judge or even center ref with this system. Why then has this quality of sparring not transferred up to higher level matches?? We cannot only assume it is a competitor's choice to lay back and play it safe looking for one point, self scoring and faking injury to focus on judging rather than performance. These athletes have been trained and coached by others. After decades of making money and sports marketing more important than the core values in TKD the chickens have come home to roost. It is not You Tube that is doing damage to TKD but greed and laziness that started four decades ago. I wish more people could stay on point with this issue instead of personal squabbles. We always seem to want to look the other way when it smells like a turd, looks like a turd but kill the person who wants to tell the truth of what he sees. From a marketing stand point USAT would gain more money and positive media exposure by increasing the quality of sparring and controversy would be replaced by increased media ratings and membership. I don't know if USAT could have an effect now if they had the will to do so. It would mean they would have to admit there was something wrong both in the past and present. Human nature seems to support don't fix it if it's not broke. This means it's easier to maintain the illusion of success by holding on to past winners and a judging system that supports that. It may be too late for this and the new national organization will refocus and gain the majority of mature membership for traditional TKD. If this happens then I hope the two organizations will work together for the common good or that the market share in the future will determine what it wants. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Seaforth Martial Arts Centre." Circle, I do not currently have a full time school, however, I believe that if you sign up for yellow pages your money is locked in. Your ad remains the same ad for the whole year/term of your contract. You can not customize your ads (for Back to School, Mother/Father's Day, Valentine's Day, Happy New Year, Summer Boot camp, Women's Self-Defence, etc.). I believe that it is better to take that yellow pages money and use it for your customized advertising ads (flyers, webpage, short-term ads, promos, gift bags, etc.). This way you can spend more money at times when you need it, and less in your good months. Good Luck!!! This is the norm? This is the world's view of Tae Kwon Do? In tournaments around here, you would be knocked out in the first seconds of the opening round! I can't hardly watch this! Maybe they would be able to block some of those kicks to the head.........Ya think? I guess it wouldn't be as exciting. Sport Taekwondo, aka Kukki-Taekwondo, is the way Taekwondo has been done in Korea for decades. This flavor of TKD made its way to the US in the late 1970s and it seems the hands just keep going lower. Why? Truth is that in the effort to get into the Olympics, Taekwondo had to be totally different from any sport currently involved with the Olympics. Judo was in the Olympics, so throws and holds were out for TKD. Boxing was in the Olympics, so punching was out. etc. Thus the focus on scoring only via kicks as no other sports were like that, and it was that which opened the door for TKD to get into the Olympics. The goal to have TKD as an Olympics sport was set by Gen. Choi c1960, but I don't think this was what he had in mind. But what he probably had in mind would have not likely been approved as a full Olympic sport. Maybe that wouldn't have been so bad...
