They are also not mentioned as options in the dan test regulations. Taegeuk are the poomsae/forms for Kukki-Taekwondo. Are questions about technique on-topic for this list? It seems mostly organizational/political so far and if that is the purpose, that's fine. The two areas I'm having trouble are balance and breathing. Searching for tips for how to improve one's balance, I seem to only come across two tips: it comes with practice and stand on one leg a lot. I do those but are there other exercises that would help? In particular, I easily lose my balance when doing a spin kick or rapid-repeat front kicks. Breathing of course is a wide-open topic. The problem I'm having is that when doing very basic jumping-jack exercises, I reach a point where I'm not physically exhausted but I can't catch my breath. I'm not feeling dizzy or weak, but as I breath I can't seem to recover easily and I actually start to feel a bit of panic, as the breaths don't restore me even though I'm gasping like a fish. One person thought that might be symptoms of hyperventilation, but gave conflicting advice of whether to breath deeper or just slower. If these questions are too basic for this list, just let me know off-list. -Jeff --__--__-- Message: 5 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Seeking Basic Technique Advice Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2008 07:54:12 -0400 From: daomyer@aol.com Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Rush To: The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Sent: Sat, 19 Apr 2008 10:11 pm Subject: [The_Dojang] Seeking Basic Technique Advice "but gave conflicting advice of whether to breath deeper or just slower"?? Do both. Deep smooth and slow breaths and dont bend over compressing your chest. Open up by standing straight. Better yet step forward and breath. Look around someone should be doing this. Balance. Focus on keeping your ear over your big toe. Thats your balance point. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Greg Hindley" To: Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2008 10:12:08 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: sparring issues Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net FirstPe315@aol.com wrote: Man, am the only one here who believes that you can exercise "control" when practicing head/face contact (with either punching OR kicking). And, what happened to a BB's (or senior students) skill to ascertain skill and physical ability level of the person they're going against and tailor they're intensity level accordingly. Aren't these high level MA abilities that we should expect? I have a piece of information for Jye...anybody can spar with full contact intensity but not make full contact...there is a difference! It's called control! I've been sparring for over 25 years and we never wore headgear and face punching and kicking was allowed albeit with control. Never seen a knockout in practice and in my own school of over 8 years, no major injuries yet...but when you've been hit in the head, you know it. AMEN Jeff. I also have traind for over 20 years going full contact without gear and with some of the Masters my brother Jeff has trained with and it is taught very early. It is very important to high level MA. Without it those who dont practice it. Get hurt or killed I train my 17 year old son who is stronger and faster than most people and we allow head and face technique when we spar full contact. He has a great deal of control Im proud to say and when he was sparring full contact on my new 100 lb heavy bag the other day his full power side kick went "into" the bag and tore it out of the ceiling. A dad couldnt be more proud to have to go buy a new bag. We train with intensity and control ALWAYS. You fight like you train. No posers in my gym, they dont last long... Jeff, I am always here....Got your back(know you dont need it) Ive seen you fight and weve have grew up together, trained together.......Your the real deal....dont get sucked in.....BUT... I have to say I did see Greg Lekes(sp) turn in and lower his head(mistake)take his eyes off you and your spin back kick to the head put him to sleep at PRMAA...lol Greg PS. Jye Ive always enjoyed reading your articles and posts I asumed you trained this way as well and shared the warriors mindset. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Accurate Information on Kong Soo Do Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2008 07:41:50 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I agree completely. It is just that you don't find the martial art of Taekwondo taught much in Korea. The martial art of Taekwondo now - mostly- just exists outside of Korea. Given strong influence of the Kukkiwon and the WTF in Korea, 99% of what you'll find there is the martial sport of Kukki-Taekwondo. Until c1974 you found a lot of time being spent on hoshinsul in Korea's TKD schools. However since then, very little. Many times more information needs to be exchanged to fully expand a thought or complete a subject. Regarding full contact, this is a subject that any well trained Master's and GM's including yours has spoken on and put into print but I did not specifically break down or expand on what I meant. First contact is broken down into Sport or legal contact and then illegal or street contact. Full contact in sport is controlled by application to only legal areas determined by the rules and by the force given enough to effect what is needed. It is also required in scoring to be evident in sound and effect on the other person being hit. It is not just control of the physical but mental and even spiritual aspects as well. Control may mean pulling the technique when you know your opponent has had enough or they make a mistake by placing themselves in a position of danger say dropping the head. You may not be able to keep from making contact but you have an obligation to pull your technique best that can be done to not purposely injure the person. I like what one GM published in one of his many fine books that morally a man should never use more force than is necessary. I also liked what I was personally taught by another that no man is your enemy and you should take no joy in hurting or killing them even if you have no choice because we are all brothers. That's a hard one to keep in mind when they are trying to hurt or kill you. Martial Arts is not just the physical but an understanding of self and the other person. Every person knows in a match when they are much stronger or weaker than the other person and should have the ego to bow out if needed or win/dominate with out causing undue harm to other person. It is a true honor for both people to fight hard in this fashion both people giving respect for the others ability and effort. This is what Olympic sparring should focus on instead of only points and politics. There are so many moral and mental lessons we are supposed to be learning before 30 in our young training years then a new level that changes every 5-10 years after. It is sad to see so many adults being expected or trying to train like teens or 20's. Control is everything and should get better and better with age and rank. The practice of control is vital to the ability to practice and understand dangerous self defense technique especially when the sharing of controlled pain is involved. The stupidest thing I ever heard was we had a Kazuki tournament here a few years ago and it was no pads anything goes and guys were getting huge goose eggs everywhere and blooding bodies and the news paper prints an interview where one guy says, Hey in the martial arts pain is your friend. Pain is useful as it relates to trust between practitioners leaning how to apply a self defense technique completely controlled so that they can learn not full blown bludgeoning of each other. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
