The contract is very specific about our flooring and mirrors. Should be good for both our school and the YMCA. Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2008 22:20:21 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I was in Korea on the trip that Master Miner referred to. I was also surprised at the very, very young Hapkido black belts. Had to laugh at all those times I heard about how hard it was in Korea, only in America are there young children sporting black belts, and things of the nature. Looking forward to going back in 2010 with World Kidohae and Grand Master Timmerman's NKMAA. At our school, we have a 4-6 year old program that goes to white belt with red insert. Then the little folks graduate into our junior taekwondo program as a "junior white belt." I was really surprised how proud they were to get promoted to white belt. The bride does a good job with that. In our school, must be nine in order to test for first degree junior black belt (poome belt) and there are age limits along the way. I detest a belt mill as much as the next fella but for anyone to argue that "X is the magic age" is plainly silly. 9 works in our school. 6 works in some schools. 18 works in others. Whatever cranks your tractor. In regards to titles, I've always thought it was peculiar when people refer to themselves with a title first. Doctor's seem to be the worse. I'm a bit amused when they refer to themselves as "Dr So-n-So" outside of a hospital just as I'm amused by martial artists that stand up and say, "my name is Master So-n-So." Geesh, your mama named you master?! LOL! Our insurance for our school only covers us if the students have on full sparring gear. Does anyone else have this situation? And be careful with the way it's written. Some insurances are supplemental to the students insurance (if applicable). Just recently the bride tore her ACL in class. They denied the claim - needed witnesses. Easy enough - we provided. Then they told us they would NOT approve the claim until AFTER the necessary procedures were done which meant we had to sign a guarantee for everything. So far they've covered about 85% leaving us about $2-3K to either argue with them or pay for. Very annoying. So part of the answer is just time. Be patient, continue training, and the balance will come. And knowing that that is almost useless to you...Good balance is largely a matter of having a strong core. If you'd like to accelerate your improvements, try cross-training in ballet and/or pilates and/or any other core-focused system. I was born in Fayetteville, NC at the Womac hospital. My family was stationed in Fort Bragg while my dad was in Vietnam. In regards to negotiating a lease or space from local community centers. The local YMCA charges/pays by the head. In our area, it seems to be a 60/40 split with the facility getting the 60%. Not a lot of room for negotiating if they have a few instructors already on site. Same with renting a space from a strip mall. A few empty spots will likely make the landlord more likely to deal. A busy mall means you basically pay what they ask. YMCA would likely be a good choice for you to consider since it's in line with Christian beliefs. Be glad to give more info if you wish.
