Melody Shuman of Shuman Concepts was the creator of Lil' Ninjas. We have been running the Lil' Dragon program for 3 1/2 years now and have just expanded to an additional location. The secret of this program's success, and most often ignored, is to not let your ego change this program. Do not alter the curriculum no matter what striking style you teach. The Lil' Dragon style has karate/taekwondo mixed with Western Boxing and Muay Thai. With all the curriculum's Life Skills aspect aside (the parents will eat that up) this program is just like preschool in the education system. It is designed to help develop the childrens' gross motor, self-awareness, physical, and social skills. I promise the Lil' Dragon curriculum is a fantastic feeder program for your regular curriculum as long as you do not alter the curriculum. Keep all the belts, hand out the stripes, teach the strikes, blocks, and stances at the pace/quality you are informed to and you shall reap the true benefits of the program. Instructors for the Lil' Dragon program have to really enjoy working with kids. They need to be patient, enthusiastic, confident, energetic, and really they do not have to have a high rank, just as long as they understand the basics....they will be fine. As long as you follow the curriculum with no altering, you, your students, and their parents will love this program. We tell the parents up front that it is not designed to get their child a black belt, but to transition them into regular classes when they are ready. We work on cooperation, motor skills, "discipline drills" and the kids love it while learning to stand in lines, follow instructions and kick. The key is to keep them moving. A friend of mine who convinced me to do it put it this, Be sure that you walk into the class prepared to have more fun than they do and you will be successful at it. He was very right. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Fri, 16 May 2008 10:57:40 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Dr. Kimm's TKD Book Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The first 70 pages (chapters 1-3) cover history, philosophy, etc., A brief history section on the 5 Kwan. I like the historical photos of the 5 Kwanjangnim who started it all. The book has 488 pages, one of his smallest. The cover states: self-defense taekwondo Korean self-defense for taekwondo instructors and students It is not the normal stuff one would see in a taekwondo book. It is really a 'basic hapkido techniques for taekwondoin' book. You can't learn the art of hapkido or the underlying principles of the art without years/decades of study in a hapkido dojang, but it does give the taekwondoin a glimpse into our world. The underlying principles of basic motion between hapkido and taekwondo are completely different, and an effort is made keep the taekwondoin in their world. So, in my opinion, the 3 lines in the title are an appropriate description. Just a side not though, someone who does study the ki arts would be served better off with the hapkido bible and vol II.
