For the effective operation of this project, the WTF will collaborate with the GCS International, an NGO with a consultative status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council. The Taekwondo Peace Corps embraces similar mission and functions as the “Peace Corps” of the United States, aiming to promote taekwondo in peace-making activities. The Taekwondo Peace Corps is devised to supplement and refine the existing WTF Solidarity program, which has been providing taekwondo equipment and training opportunity to the taekwondo less-developed member nations. Initially, the Taekwondo Peace Corps will be dispatched twice a year for one month each to the countries that request assistance. The WTF is also planning a long-term program between 6 months to two years. We will be sending the first 12 teams abroad this July for one month; one team consists of four people - three will be those with at least 3rd Kukkiwon Dan certificate holders and one with proficient language skill. Recruitment is already in progress, receiving applications from Koreans aged between 20 and 35. Prior to dispatch, those selected with proven competence as taekwondo instructor will go through a period of training course for overseas service. It will also supply instructor training manual and taekwondo education program package that are required for different levels of taekwondo training. Host countries for the first dispatch will be selected this month. The application is open to all 188 WTF member nations. While expanses for air fare and training are covered by us, accommodation and local transportation are to be provided by the hosting countries. The scope and kind of activities will be decided after consultation with the successful applicant nations. Attached is the application form. If your country wishes to be considered as one of the host countries of the first Taekwondo Peace Corps, you can also download the application form from the WTF Web site (www.wtf.org). It should be sent to Ms. Tina Hong at the World Taekwondo Federation at tinahong@wtf.org or via fax at +82 2 553 4728. http://wtf.org/site/cms_file/images/default/100_199/100/Taekwondo_Peace_Corps _Dispatch_Application_Form.ppt The deadline for the application is the 25th of May. The result will be notified by early June. I ask for your active participation and support. Abdallah, 24, of Houston, lost to Lopez, 24, of Sugar Land, 1-0 in overtime at USA Taekwondo's Olympic trials last month in Des Moines, Iowa, to determine the federation's representative in the women's featherweight division at the Beijing Games. Lopez's win enabled her to join her older brothers, two-time Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez and Mark Lopez, as the first set of three siblings to compete in the same sport at the same Olympics for the United States since 1904. After losing to Lopez in another disputed fight last year, Abdallah had to beat Lopez twice in Des Moines to win the Olympic berth, while Lopez had to win once. Lopez won the first fight to clinch the spot, but Abdallah said judges did not register points she scored and that Lopez shouldn't have been credited with the winning point. "I fought exactly how I planned to fight," Abdallah said. "After I lost in August (to Lopez), I knew that if I got hit, I would get scored on. If I fell, I would get a deduction. So I fought, saying that I'm not going to fall, I'm not going to go out of bounds, I'm not going to get touched. And I think that is why the fight went 0-0 the entire time." Her father, Thomas Duhart, said it was possible that judges may have conspired to award the match to Diana Lopez and that it was "fantasy and tainted history" to say that Lopez was the proper winner. Said Abdallah: "I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I know that something happened that changed the outcome of the bout." Warren Fitzgerald, Abdallah's attorney, and Deric Muhammad of the Houston Millions More Movement said the House Judiciary Committee should investigate the Abdallah-Lopez fight. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
