They joined our school earlier this month and got orders to Dallas. The original belt I was awarded in 1982 had been embroidered by my instructor with my name and his name in Korean on one belt end. The other belt end had a bar to signify rank at the bottom, and a cross at the top. There was enough room between the first bar and the cross to add bars as rank promotions occurred. I did so up to 4th dan, but started wearing another plain belt for a couple of reasons: 1. My original belt was turning into a shredded grey rag over the years of time and use, and I was afraid with continued daily use it would fall apart completely. I started wearing it only on testings. 2. I began teaching at a group home for troubled kids, and didn't want the trappings of authority all over the belt I wore while working with them. I was (and am) simply a black belt. I found I liked the plain belt, and wore it solely for years until I was promoted to master, and presented with a new embroidered belt. Out of respect for my master and grandmaster, it is the belt I have worn since. The belts I award are embroidered as the one I received in 1982. Blessings, and prayers for a safe, happy 4th to all. Korea for martial arts expo Instructors hope presence of Bill and Alice Vandivere, both 83, will be an "eye-opener" to rest of world about senior citizens doing martial arts Jacksonville After two-and-a-half years in martial arts training, octogenarians Bill and Alice Vandivere have traveled to South Korea this week to demonstrate their tae kwon do skills on the world stage. The operators of Kinston's King Tiger Tae Kwon Do Academy said the second annual World Tae Kwon Do Culture Expo, which begins today in Jeonju, South Korea, will also be an opportunity to show that senior citizens can excel in martial arts. "I don't think there's anybody else that's 83 years old doing this that we know of," Bill Vandivere deadpanned earlier this week. "There might be somebody who's 90 doing this." Christina Alphin, the academy's vice president, said many seniors participate in the sport, but the number is decreasing throughout the world. "I think it's really going to be an eye-opener for the Koreans, just because they don't have a lot of senior citizens (doing martial arts)," she said. Bill Vandivere said the last time he trained in martial arts was in the U.S. military during World War II. Alice Vandivere, also 83, said she had never done martial arts until she and her husband of 60 years began taking classes at King Tiger in January 2006. They are currently at the green belt level. "I enjoy the discipline and I enjoy the exercise that I get, otherwise I wouldn't be in as good a shape as I am now," she said Monday as the group waited for their flight. "It helps me mentally as well as physically; it keeps me focused, I just enjoy it." King Tiger, which operates academies throughout the state, has sent students to international tournaments in prior years, but this year is the first time Kinston students have gone overseas. Thomas Alphin, head instructor in Kinston and husband of Christina, said his master instructor in Greenville asked him to bring the Vandiveres to the Korean expo. This is also the first time he's traveled overseas with students. "This is going to be exciting to me," said Alphin, whose students have competed in state and national tournaments. "It's a great opportunity just to meet people with the same interest as you in martial arts, competing, training," he said. Bill said he won't take part in any matches, but he will demonstrate the tae kwon do form designated for his skill level. Alice was also set to demonstrate her form, but recent eye surgery will prevent her from doing so. "She won't be ready for that; she'll just laugh at me (performing)," Bill joked. "I am her source of amusement." When asked if she was still looking forward to the event, Alice said: "Oh yes, I sure am; the competition of course, and the countryside. I love beautiful countrysides." The Vandiveres and the Alphins spent two days before the expo visiting the Olympic facilities in Beijing, China. The expo itself is not only a showcase for tae kwon do, but also Korean culture. "We have never been in the Orient before, either one of us, so it's going to be a real learning experience for us as well as observational," Bill said. "We'll be able to see things we hadn't seen before. From what we've read we're going to experience some very good Korean cuisine." --__--__-- Message: 8 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 04 Jul 2008 13:35:01 -0400 From: hapkidodavetn@aol.com Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: belt embroidery Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net My name, and Holcomb Hapkido Dave --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
