So, to address the questions about belt colors, ours was explained to me as being very traditional (whatever your standards are for traditional). Anyway, our colors are as follows: White Belt = 0 Gup and 10 Gup Yellow Belt = 9 Gup, 8 Gup and 7 Gup Blue Belt = 6 Gup, 5 Gup and 4 Gup Red Belt = 3 Gup, 2 Gup and 1 Gup Black Belt = all dans This was the approach by my grandmaster...60+ years old when he died a number of years ago. His explanation was: White...absence of color Yellow, Blue and Red...primary colors Black...combination of primary colors Personally, I believe fewer belt colors is better. A new belt for each Gup rank teaches the student to expect to receive something every time they do what is expected. This is not how life works. Sometimes, you may do everything perfectly and never get anything tangible in return...life lessons in the dojang -- who knew. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Sun, 13 Jul 2008 19:47:03 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] Korean Olympic Team Aims For Top 10 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Korean Olympic Team Aims For Top 10 Chosun.com There is just a little under a month left before the start of the Beijing Summer Olympics. While Korean athletes prepare, there seems to be more confidence than jitters. At a group interview on Wednesday athletes made public their "10-10 Goal", a promise to come home with 10 gold medals and rank within the top 10 for total medal count. Hope is high for Team Korea's strongholds archery and taekwondo. Other areas most likely to see gold medals are judo, wrestling, gymnastics, shooting, swimming and badminton. Swimming gold medal hopeful Park Tae-hwan expects positive results given the amount of training he has had. Taekwondo competitor Cha Dong- min reiterated his will for gold. And weightlifter Chang Mi-ran predicts a win amid speculations that her Chinese rival may drop out. The Korean Olympic Committee, meanwhile, introduced five types of new sportswear to be worn at the summer games. To become an Olympian is something to be proud of and to win a gold medal is an achievement in and of itself. But whether or not they come back with gold, Korean athletes heading to Beijing can rest assured that either way they are all the pride of their nation. Myers in 85 or 86 for a tournament put on by GM Lee. We were dubbed as the Chicago Team and the team from the Ft. Meyers school was dubbed the Pan American Team. I remember having a great time at GM Lee's school. He had a combination health club and martial arts school at that time and walking the halls was distracting at times. Any way, There was a 3rd Dan man that was phenomenal. He could jump over your head, spin and front kick you as he went by. It was right out of the old Kung Fu movies where the hero would jump and fly through the air and all you would hear was the flutter of his clothing as he flew by. I remember GM Lee too. He did a demo where he broke a stack of cinder blocks with a spear hand. -I'll never forget that. He was a great speaker and motivator. I miss him. Any way, do you remember the event? The Ft. Meyers Team did a flashy demo with strobe lights to the Van Halen song: Jump, before the competition started. Do you remember the event? I posted this on Master Mac's board last Friday and wanted to ask this forum as well. For those of you who know the Chang Han Tuls, in Toi-Gye Tul, movement number 12, what is the technique you do and what is its application? Gordon Okerstrom --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Gordon Okerstrom" To: Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2008 14:14:48 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Chang Han Toi-Gye Tul Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The reason I'm asking about Toi-Gye is that we see many schools perform movement 12 as placing fists on hips (Peter Pan). The Tae Kwon Do Legacy text states double elbow strike and the video shows the Fists on hips. -a contradiction. I wanted to pole the list for what most instructors teach. Australia will send four taekwondo fighters to the Beijing Games but there are no guarantees about the country's future in the sport following a bitter split over the past 12 months. The AOC has appointed Michael McHugh, who served in the High Court for 16 years until 2005, to determine whether there is one Australian organisation governing the sport. Taekwondo Australia had its funding cut by the Australian Sports Commission late last year for failing to amend its constitution to meet ASC standards. Taekwondo Australia, which has 450 clubs, has since changed its constitution to meet ASC standards but hasn't been reaffiliated, while Sports Taekwondo Australia (STA) is reportedly attempting a takeover. International Olympic Committee member Phil Coles has been a key figure in establishing STA in a highly political fight. The AOC today said Mr McHugh would have the job of determining whether one group: “is exercising a real and specific sports activity; conducting its activities in compliance with both the Olympic charter and the rules of the World Taekwondo Federation; and subject to being affiliated to the WTF and any other pre-conditions.” If one group did comply with all three then they appear set to be admitted to membership of the AOC. Currently a mediator and arbitrator, Mr McHugh will also act as an Australian team advocate at the Beijing Games. --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2008 16:08:39 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] Taekwondo Summer Camp Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Attention 12-17 year old red and black belt athletes!
