Defending against a boxer and note to Shimmering Glow (Ken McDonough) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: "Thomas Gordon" To: Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2008 16:58:44 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] 15 year old HKD 3rd degree Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net http://www.dailycommercial.com/07-27-07-blackbelt Teenager masters Hapkido ROXANNE BROWN Staff Writer CLERMONT -- Andrea Marie Stone recently earned her third black belt in Hapkido, a type of reality-based self-defense system that's often taught to the Korean police and special forces. Andrea Marie, 15, is proud of her accomplishment. Most of all, though, she feels she can walk with more confidence. She knows she can defend herself better should she find herself in a dangerous situation. That is why Andrea urges her friends -- girls and women everywhere -- to sign up for Hapkido or similar classes. "You don't how hard I'm trying to get my friends to take these classes. It's great exercise and lots of fun, too," Andrea said. "In all my years in these classes, it's mainly all men and boys but anyone can do it." When Andrea was 5, she approached her father, Ron Stone, about enrolling in karate classes, as a friend of hers had done. Stone said he didn't know anything about karate but had studied Tae Kwan Do in college, so he went with that. That was in 1998. Then 46, Stone decided he'd join Andrea in a joint learning experience. By age 8, through her studies, lessons and her father's help, Andrea had earned her first black belt. "I was not overly surprised because in Korea, children get black belts at young ages, but in the U.S., I guess it's not that common -- so I was pretty happy," Stone said. "Most of all though, I was proud of her and impressed by her 'Stick-to-itivness.' " "A lot of kids like the martial arts, but sometimes get bored with it and give it up." Since then, Andrea has not stopped, moving on Tang Soo Do, working her way up and earning a black belt in that as well, and now Hapkido. "Part of it (sticking to it) is that I feel I'm getting good exercise and part of it is seeing how far I can go and how much I can learn about each one," Andrea said. "I'm really close to my dad too, so it's been a lot of fun to be able to do this with him." "Plus, it's a lot of fun to be flipping your dad too," she said. Andrea said Hapkido has been the hardest of the three art forms however, since it does not involve as much sparring, like in Tae Kwan Do and Tang Soo Do, but more concentration and energy. Stone said Hapkido is a "soft art" that's not about muscle building, but about coordinating energy and using the opponent's force and their weaknesses against them. "I wanted her to be able to protect herself but stay feminine too," Stone said. Andrea said Hapkido is more complete and polar, in lieu of the constant moving, punching and kicking involved in the other martial art forms. Most of all though, Andrea still hopes her accomplishments will encourage other girls to want to study the art of Hapkido. Andrea has been studying at the American Dragon Martial Arts Academy in Clermont, and said her Korean instructor, Mi Yi Hackworth, is great. "It's easy defensive stuff that any woman can do and I really wish that more girls would get into it," Andrea said. "And I don't feel like Wonder Woman or anything but I don't feel all freaked about walking down the street or somewhere." --__--__-- Message: 2 From: michael tomlinson To: Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Training over 50 Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2008 02:05:39 +0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Got to agree Big Ken...personally....for me....Hapkido plus Glock plus Kimber == good sleeping at night... Serious, real life scenarios applied, with resulting responses.   Digressing and note to "Shimmering Glow" (I mean Shimmering Light)= I think you know what I was quoting was from the film "Taxi Driver", circa 1976 with Robert DeNiro (aka Travis Bickle), and directed by M. Scorsese.   Now, the "Easy Rider" film you quote was about, "... a counterculture film, Easy Rider explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise and fall of hippie movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle." The movie was written by Peter Fonda."   To clarify the analogy you mention, an old dude with a sidearm (like me) is more along the lines of Charles Bronson, re: recall the movie Once Upon a Time in the West which is a 1968 epic spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone. Charles Bronson was "Harmonica."   I know this can be confusing when trying to understand the nuances of my writing. Nevertheless, thought I would clarify.   Big K --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
