Coach Fredericks was the head wrestling coach at OSU for 30 years. I knew him and his son. I'd rather either step out of that person's range, or cut their leg off so that the power in the kick is past me. here's the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrjcWTmPv5M&feature=user   Jye --__--__-- Message: 5 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Don't know about this one Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2008 09:56:58 -0400 From: daomyer@aol.com Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net If I am going to be offensive like that with that block I do not try to block with the hand to foot. As a matter of fact thats an extra block with head tilt just in case. I?am initially covering the side of my body and yes moving. If I move in most likely a body check, or leg trap and takedown?or my favorite.... the lower arm covering actually starts as a decending cross elbow that smacks the attackers knee. Did you know that when they pulled those aliens out of that spaceship in Roswell they all had purple spandex on!!! Where the heck did you folks think that stuff came from?? It's not of this earth..... I use to attend a ton of seminars and Chris Ford demo'ed and spoke at one about positions... of course every wrestler understands that position comes first and then you apply the technique...if you try to work the technique before position you have no balance, power, or control...just like in HKD when you try joint locks and throws without applying your position first the technique becomes weak and mushy...and easy to counter... whenever I hear people say that HKD doesn't really work against resistant opponents you can boil it down to about 90 percent that the position was off before the technique is applied..the cool thing is when you see Hapkido players that can move so fast and decisive that they arrive in the position a nano second before applying the technique...then there is no counter...only peeing down your leg from the pain...and that's what I love about the art of harmonious power.. They often have an ad tattooed on their back (I guess it's temporary).   The best line to sum up ads and athletes was in the movie Rocky II. Rocky is told to take his money he made in the first fight with Apollo Creed and invest in condominiums. Rocky's response:   "Sorry, I don't use 'em."   Ciao,   Big K       --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2008 11:28:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Don't know about this one To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net That guy would have been better off protecting his head (think boxing) with elbows pointing outward moving in towards the attacker so 1) he wouldn't put any part of his body against the full force of a roundhouse kick, 2) he'd injure the part of the opponent's leg that may hit his elbow as he's advancing in to control the guy's center or take him out.   The block he did would be better for blocking a hand strike.   Jye --- On Tue, 8/5/08, daomyer@aol.com wrote: If I am going to be offensive like that with that block I do not try to block with the hand to foot. The nice thing about hapkido, is that if it has been used in combat, it is probably in the art. Just about anything that can be done standing can be done on the ground. The theories of motion in hapkido work the same regardless of whether you are horizontal or vertical.
