One more question and I'll leave you alone: How many of you have walls in your training area that have padding (mats?) I don't mean in the psycho ward. Example: if you train doing the running flying side kick, do you have your walls safely padded so that students cannot hurt themselves on the bare walls. That being said, I make each student try the techniques to get good at them. The ability to do such techniques really only serves to enhance your ability to do a phenomenal front kick in the heat of action. Dave O. For the MDKers it is a matter of tradition. The flying side kick was perhaps _the_ signature technique of the kwan.? ? But now and then it comes in handy for kicking a raiding soldier of one of those shorter horses that were used in Asia.? ? When i practiced it, it was in air and on trees and the heavy bag. I think a padded wall would be cool as long as the student is a seasoned student since the wall doesn't give.   Jye --- On Mon, 8/18/08, ISAHDQ wrote: From: ISAHDQ Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: One more To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Monday, August 18, 2008, 7:49 PM Ok, thanks for the humor and a couple of serious ones. Our goal was to fold those heavy 5 foot tall bags in half. Did it for many years. Jumped over people holding their ankles breaking lots of boards, etc. All that pointless nonsense back then has now given me arthritis in my right hip. NOT recommended. These days we are more familiar with the term 'repetitive injury' and we are hopefully smarter, back then we were just teenage boys that did not know what fear or stupidity was. If you have a heavy bag in your dojang, put a sign above it saying that those kicking with full power will be shot at sunrise. It is your liability and their future health at risk if you don't. Here is a good application (that was a joke) http://www.hapkidoselfdefense.com/Twiyo_Yopchagi.jpg It was staged in the 80's for a local newspaper back when I had hair. We could do the kick three different ways. One; to strike the target with speed and accuracy, two; with timing in order to send the bag flying away from us and three, to impart the most destructive energy. The first one made the bag quiver. It was more of a slap or stinging kick. The second was a push as we transferred our energy to the bag. The third was where we got to hit something with all the might we could muster. It let off some steam for us. All of these required us to run the full length of the dojang and usually fly over a group of huddled students. When we did the "pushing kick" we had to have a catcher for the bag or it would hit the wall or ceiling and do damage to the school. Our instructor's biggest concern was the landing. We were to land with our toes pointing in the direction we came from. This way, we landed so our knee joint wouldn't be torqued laterally. I remember we did the kick on different angles too. First is the obvious frontal assault. Then there are the following angles as you pass the bag while in the air. The most fun was trying to hit the bag on the back side as you were falling away. Sometimes, we would tumble away from that one. : ) Gordon Okerstrom --__--__-- Message: 11 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] RE: Flying side kick poll Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 14:22:08 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net But given that there are a few thousand folks reading this, please only reply directly to isahdq@sc.rr.com.
