Grand Master Lee passed away on August 18 after battling stomach cancer. "Grand Master Jhoo Beom Lee was a great martial artist who among his many accomplishments was an instructor to action movie superstar Jean Claude Van Damme," said USAT CEO David Askinas. "He was a great friend to USAT and a member of our Martial Arts Commission. He was always upbeat looking to help out USAT in anyway he could. He will be missed." ================================ Grand Master Lee Beom Jhoo on 18/8/2008 deceased in the University Hospital in Jette. Through this way we want our sympathy and our deepest condolences to his family: his wife, his children, his brothers and sisters. Master Lee was born in South Korea as the second son of Tae-Yun Lee and Yong-Won Kwon. In 1961 he began in Seoul Taekwondo, Hapkido and Judo to learn. He studied Taekwondo (Tang Soo Do) under Grandmaster Hwang Kee, the founder of the Moo Duk Kwan and Shin Moo Hapkido under Grandmaster Hong. In addition he also trained Chikong and Taichi Chuan. After years of hard training showed the results are not to come. He won several national and international competitions including in 1968 the first World Taekwondo. In 1969 Master Hwang Kee asked whether he wanted his son training on a U.S. base. A few years later, in 1971, Master Lee was a soldier in Vietnam. Since he was 14 months service in the army. In September 1974 Master Lee came to Belgium and at the request of the Belgian gevechtskunstacademie. Then he founded several clubs all over the world and gave training. This he did among others in Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Britain, the USA and China. During the last 25 years Master Lee directed more than 170 clubs and trained a total of more than 460,000 members. One of the main purpose of Master Lee is creating a sense of family within its clubs. One of his most important principles is that everyone must help each other to body and mind in harmony. This is true both for beginners as for the teachers. Another important principle that he would convey to his students is honesty and respect for the man.
