People know me as a taekwondo instructor and lifelong student so they were baffled at watching the Olympics event of seemingly useless fighting. And there also is the embarrassment of the Cuban competitor kicking a referee in the face because he was disqualified. That is contrary to all the teachings and philosophy of "taekwon-do" which is how we spell the traditional martial art. I don't think fighting sports in general are a good activity for society but I certainly don't see this form of the art as an Olympic event. It does not represent what we do in this martial art in any way. I am not writing this to ridicule the other side. I have spent 25 years training and the last 13 years teaching an art where we emphasize respect, discipline and self-control while teaching a practical and proven form of self-defence. Children and adults can and will benefit from a quality traditional martial art program. It would be unfair to taint the entire art by identifying it with the Olympic sport calling itself taekwondo. As a professional in the industry, I am extremely concerned with fighting styles that emphasize sport first. It is irresponsible to teach such things as punches and kicks without emphasizing the philosophical aspects of the training as well as putting equal time into non-competition-related aspects of training that condition the mind to use caution and discipline if faced with a situation that arouses anger. Other sports face problems with violence that is condoned as part of the game. What sort of problems can you run into if the sport was all about punching and kicking a person until they are knocked unconscious? I am not suggesting that everyone who trains in fighting sports have anger management problems but there is an attraction for people who have anger issues. In martial arts, these students either get bored with fundamental movements and quit, or they develop enough discipline to control themselves before they are ever taught some of the more lethal martial art techniques. There are some very good Olympic athletes working extremely hard to represent their countries in the sport of taekwondo. But it is not the true form of this martial art. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2008 13:16:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Ken McDonough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Ray's Surgery Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Ray:   I just had the same surgery this week. If the surgery's on your face, expect eye swelling.   Enjoy the pulling feeling of the needle oozing through your skin...ah, the memories. Make sure you are provided enough local anesthesia...   KMcDee --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2008 14:03:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Jonathan Boorstein Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Surgery To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net glad to know it went well; hope they got it all jb ----- Original Message ---- From: Ray To: The_Dojang Sent: Thursday, September 4, 2008 4:14:34 PM Subject: [The_Dojang] Surgery Fwiw... the list is back up.
