His absence is fueling speculation that the 66-year-old leader's health may be deteriorating. Kim did not attend the military parade held Tuesday at Pyongyang's central Kim Il-sung Square, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported. He was in attendance for previous parades on the 50th and 55th anniversaries. Questions over North Korean leader Kim's health have received a lot of press lately, both in Korea and overseas. He has reportedly been suffering from a number of ailments including diabetes and minor heart problems, but none have been life threatening or grave enough to affect his public activities so far. In Seoul, a local newspaper reported Tuesday that Kim had collapsed last month because of his worsening health. The report quoted an official at the South Korean Embassy in Beijing as saying the embassy had obtained an intelligence briefing concerning Kim's deteriorating health. The report by the Chosun Ilbo claimed that Kim had collapsed on Aug. 22 and that South Korean embassy officials were attempting to verify the account provided by Chinese diplomatic sources. There have also been reports in the past few days of a group of medical doctors from China visiting the North to check up on Kim's health. A Chinese government official who declined to be identified told The Korea Times correspondent Sunny Lee in Beijing that there was an unsubstantiated rumor that doctors from Germany may be planning to visit the North. The official said it is unlikely that Chinese doctors would be providing medical attention to Kim. In the past, the North Korean leadership generally sought medical help from countries such as Germany and France, and Russia. One factor fueling the current media speculation regarding the ``Dear Leader's'' health is that he has not appeared in public for nearly a month. Kim's last public appearance was on Aug. 14, when he inspected a military unit. Many foreign media speculate that Kim might have already died and that his body-doubles are now posing as the North Korean leader. Reports by the U.K.-based Sky News and ABC News from the United States are citing a new book written by a North Korea specialist from Japan. Waseda University Professor Toshimitsu Shigemura, an expert on the North Korean regime, wrote in his book, ``The True Character of Kim Jong-il,'' that the authoritarian leader had succumbed to diabetes five years ago. The professor, citing anonymous sources from North Korea, alleged that Kim's look-alikes are now making appearances in public events and have even met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao. The Hankook Ilbo, a sister publication of The Korea Times, reported Tuesday that Kim's second son, Kim Jong-chul, 27, has emerged as the most likely heir to take over the leadership. He is already making his mark in senior government posts, the paper said. Kim's eldest son, Kim Jong-nam, 37, has fallen out of favor with his lavish overseas trips to Macau and Japan. The third son, Kim Jong-woon, 25, is unlikely to succeed because of his young age and lack of government experience, the Hankook Ilbo reported. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: mrs.goldstein@gmail.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2008 04:01:31 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] text poomsae Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I sent the gentleman a Word document of the 8 forms that I had put together for my 2nd dan. The Korea Times quoted Choi Jung-hwa, son of the late Choi Hong-hi who founded the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) in 1966, as saying North Korea ordered overseas ITF masters, including himself, to assassinate President Chun Doo Hwan. "After taking control of the ITF, the North trained spies and sent them overseas, disguising them as taekwondo masters," the Korea Times quoted Choi as telling reporters on his return to South Korea on Monday after living overseas for 34 years. The Korea Times quoted Choi as saying he plotted to kill Chun on a visit to Canada in 1982, but Canadian police got wind of the plan and Choi fled to North Korea. An official at South Korea's culture ministry had no comment. Choi Jung-hwa could not be reached for immediate comment on the media coverage. Long-viewed with suspicion in South Korea, the ITF's structure is fragmented, with different groups in Austria and Canada claiming Choi Hong-hi's heritage after his death in 2002. Choi senior fell out of favor with then South Korean President Park Chung-hee in the 1970s, exiling himself to Canada and taking with him his International Taekwondo Federation, which had built up a widespread international membership. In 1973, the separate and unrelated World Taekwondo Federation sprang up in South Korea, rivaling the ITF and gaining huge popularity. WTF club memberships in South Korea dwarf ITF memberships, although ITF-style taekwondo enjoys greater popularity abroad. WTF taekwondo was adopted as an Olympic sport at the Sydney 2000 games and differs from ITF in sparring techniques and strategies. The JoongAng Ilbo newspaper said Choi had returned to South Korea to clear up misunderstandings about his past. "I have committed some wrongs whether it was my intention or not," it quoted Choi as telling reporters. "I should pay for what I have done." --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2008 14:15:46 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] Lopez to pursue complaint Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Lopez to pursue complaint against Taekwondo federation DAVID BARRON Chron.com Sept. 10, 2008 Two-time Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez said Tuesday that he and USA Taekwondo will proceed with a complaint to the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the failure of the World Taekwondo Federation to provide fair and proper judging at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Lopez, who won a bronze medal after losing his first bout in six years in the wake of a referee’s disputed decision in a second-round match, said the appeal is not designed to overturn the outcome but to call attention to problems with the Korean-dominated governing body for international taekwondo. “The most important thing is to hold the WTF responsible,” Lopez said. “I don’t intend to change anything with the medals. I’m happy with the bronze medal. But we want to stand by what we believe is right and for the court to look at what we feel was done wrong by the officials and referees.” Lopez, 29, of Sugar Land lost to Mario Sarmiento of Italy, the eventual silver medalist in the welterweight division, after losing a point through accrued penalties because of what USA Taekwondo officials believe was an incorrect rules application by referee Oh Il Nam of Indonesia. Lopez, his brother Mark and his sister Diana became the first U.S. siblings to win medals at the same Olympic Games. Mark won a silver medal in the men’s featherweight division, and Diana won a bronze in the women’s featherweight division. Video review at issue The appeal to CAS, which attempts to settle international sports disputes through arbitration or mediation, will contend that the WTF failed to follow its own rules by refusing to examine video of the match after Lopez and USA Taekwondo filed a protest alleging that the referee’s decision was incorrect. “They didn’t bother examining the evidence, and that’s wrong,” Lopez said. “They could have looked and said we don’t agree with you and that we stand by the judges after reviewing the tapes, but they didn’t even do that.” WTF officials have refused to reply to e-mailed questions regarding problems with the sport’s administration at the Olympics. “We want to help develop procedures to deal with protests,” said Jean Lopez, Steven Lopez’s older brother and coach of the U.S. team. “The only way to make changes in the sport is to give this the attention that it deserves. ” The Lopezes were among more than a dozen Houston-area Olympic coaches and athletes honored Tuesday at City Hall. Among those absent was Mark Lopez, who is recovering from surgery to repair two broken bones in his left hand, which was injured in his opening match in Beijing. Diana Lopez said she faces surgery to reattach the ligament to the scaphoid bone of her left wrist. She said the injury, which was the result of blocking opponents’ kicks with her hand, was discovered in Beijing.
