First, he indicated that I should teach an hour after school taekwondo program in my local high school for free if necessary leading up to green belt or teach in adult education leading to green belt. This would afford an opportunity to market my school from blue belt to black belt. He said further that every student should be given a dvd of WTF forms to practice at home with. This sounds great...opinions? Zeishe From: Bob Burns, OMAC (Oriental Martial Arts College) Indianapolis, IN, & Columbus, Ohio This is good advice, and I encourage you to try it a few times, with the permission of the school or church group. My Grand Master, Young P. Choi, (and older Brother: Joon P. Choi) have for many years done demonstrations at local schools and churches, especially around holidays and special occasions; they offer the first 3 lessons (1 hr. each), plus white do-bok for $30.00, and even have "coupons" which each student is expected to take and give to friends at school and church at least once each month; the coupon entitles the person to a "discount" from the $30.00 of $10.00, and includes the students siblings and parents and close relatives; it works, and over the past 34 years, he has trained over 200 black belts, 7 of whom have gone on to open their own schools, and he offers 3 week summer classes where the parents can drop the students off at 7:30 a.m. (going to work) and pick them up after work; the students are given breakfast and lunch, plus many hours of valuable training; he has a very loyal student following, and offers: TKD, HKD, Kung Fu, Korean Taiji, weapons and invaluable training in self-control, respect, persistence, and how to be a good Martial Artist and person. The free demos seem to bring in many new students, but as with all schools, many of the students don't want to work hard to achieve a desired goal; rather, many believe that martial arts can be learned like a "computer game" and when they realize it takes years to learn and many more to master, they get discouraged, or their parents simply refuse to fund the training (as you've probably learned by now); but the few who do succeed and persevere usually hang around long enough to help train many more students, and help to lend credence to the relevance to the training program. Looks like a great light and weapon, both in close range due to construction and long range due to the strobe setting. Remember you can HAVE a tuition free program but you should charge for uniforms, testing and charge a registration fee. Take it from me, people will not place value in a program that is offered for free.
