While there, I attended a black belt test for 1-3 dans, but for 4th you need to be evaluated by the federation higher ups. (my instructors sat on the evaluation panel for the 1-3 dan test I watched) Originally, my instructor was going to take me to Seoul to test in front of the higher federation officials, but the schedule got changed and they were not able to see me while I was there. Rather than put the test off till my next visit to Korea, they told my instructor to test me at his school and film everything. So that is what he did. A couple times he called Seoul to ensure I was doing everything, and he was filming everything, they wanted to see. Basically I did some of everything. Kicking, Falling, Joint Locks and Throws from a variety of attacks, Escort Techniques, Knife Defense Techniques, Dan Bong Techniques, Belt Techniques, Cane Techniques, etc. I just learned this week that I was awarded my 4th dan. My instructor is sending me my certificate. So that was good news. Belts and certificates don’t mean as much to me as learning and passing on what I know to others. However, it is nice to be recognized for the training I've done. I just wanted to share the good news since some people knew I was testing last June. Thanks to those that wished me luck back at test time. Not all that difficult to do, but easy to cut your hand of you don't know what you're doing. The stupidest one I saw was at a tourny down in the Los Angeles area several years ago. They did demos prior to the start of the competition. It got a late start (Korean time) and then this young master decided to show the several hundred in attendance how well he could break glass. Broken glass went everywhere! It took another hour to clean up most of the glass before the sparring could begin, ~2 hours late...
