The Level 2 Seminar is scheduled to take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on January 8th and 9th. The Level 2 - Developing Taekwondo Athletes and Coaches Seminar is the program where coaches will start to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. This comprehensive seminar takes a closer look into the technical and skill development of Taekwondo athletes. It provides coaches with information that will develop or strengthen the skills needed to guide their athletes toward performance excellence in competition! Level 2 also introduces coaches to sports science principles and its application to coaching Olympic-style Taekwondo. The program continues to build upon the competency-based approach by providing opportunities for coaches to apply the theories into practice at the seminar. To ensure that all coaches who participate in this seminar have a quality experience, it is going to be limited to 20 coaches! An application form is available to be downloaded on the USAT website. The deadline for applications is Friday, December 5th and will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Do not hesitate so that you can be one of the few Taekwondo coaches in the country to have a Level 2 certification! For additional information about the Level 2 Seminar, please visit the coaching section of the USAT website at: http://www.usa-taekwondo.us/content/index/2648. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Thu, 6 Nov 2008 20:12:46 -0800 (PST) From: Christopher Spiller To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] ITF Sparring (was Re: Video Clip: Sparring clips) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >>Message: 1 From: Joseph Cheavens To: Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Video Clip: Sparring clips Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2008 18:42:59 -0600 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Looks like ITF is making some improvements in terms of more realistic fighting (i.e. continuous sparring v.s. point sparring and allowing heavier contact to the head with hand strikes) whereas WTF is stagnating in their same tippy-tap game of tag.<< The ITF has had continuous sparring since the 1970's, IIRC. As for contact level, that tends to increase with the level of the tournament. From what I heard by people who were there, the contact level at the ITF World Championship in 2004 in South Korea was basically full contact. The ITF also has a full contact tournament circuit, the ITC (International Taekwon-Do Circuit) which is headed up by Master Nestor Gallaraga form Argentina. It features full contact matches between very highly rated ITF fighters. There have been several ITC matches held in conjunction with ITF WC's recently. This camp is a great opportunity for USAT members to train with athletes from the Pan American region. Participation in this camp will grant athletes free entry into the 2008 USAT Rocky Mountain Open. Therefore, athletes should plan on arriving December 3rd and departing on December 8th. The camp will cover various aspects of Olympic-style Taekwondo led by some of the top coaches in the United States. In order to be eligible to participate athletes must be current USAT members at least 14 years of age and have a 1st Dan black belt ranking. The registration fee to be a part of this exciting opportunity is $350.00, which will cover OTC room and board for the duration of the event, entry into the Rocky Mountain Open and high quality taekwondo instruction. Additional details pertaining to the camp/event will be posted on the USAT website in the near future at www.usa-taekwondo.us. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 07:29:59 -0600 From: "Wood, Robert L Civ USAF AMC 43 SFS/S5B" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Time in Grade Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Initially I believe time in grade (TIG) was used by the school master to test the loyalty of the pupil. You can find examples of withholding information in the guilds of renaissance Europe. The master craftsman would hold secret the processes to safeguard their lively hood. Why should a martial arts master craftsman not do the same thing? Another thing to consider is the American Entitlement Disorder (AED). I realize that I didn't know half of what I thought I knew....point is...no one let me advance without the proper amount of time...so in essence it also helps your instructor save you from your own ego.... That happened in 1991. Since 1991 (in the past 17 plus years) I have been promoted twice. Rank should equal time in rank and quality of technique. Quality of technique is going to take time and dedication to practice. Over the years I have been offered many double jumps in rank just by switching organizations. That will never happen. I have been on the mats with hapkidoin who, on paper outrank me, but yet, my 3 year blue belts have to work with them on their basic motion. Hapkido technique is fluid and graceful when done properly, to paraphrase what Rick said, that just is not going to happen without time in rank. If a instructor gives away rank without time in rank and quality of technique, then others are going to naturally assume they had their rank given to them without working for it. The same can be said that if one was given rank, the rank of his/her students have little value. Some people are paper collectors, not dedicated practitioners of their art. That has always been true and is getting worse. But when the paper collectors get on the mats and demonstrate their technique, the truth is obvious. To quote my teacher, "when the green flag drops, the BS stops." Jere R.
