I take TKD with my two young children.  I have reached green belt, my son is yellow and my daughter is intermediate white belt.  I did ask the instructors about time required to make black belt, but for very specific reasons...I wanted to be able to tell my kids what to expect as far as being promoted.  I wanted my kids to understand that I would probably advance faster than them.  I also wanted to know that this dojang wouldn't be offering black belts to young kids.  The question I ended up posing to the instructor was how long the *average* black belt took to reach that grade, and that is just what he explained.  While the merit in not focusing on timelines is certainly valid, it does give a general idea of what to expect, which matters to some folks. Conversely, as a Grand Master ages, and someone younger can do what he "used to", should GM just step aside? Growth and development in the martial arts has the potential balance physical, mental and spiritual development. If we focus on just one aspect, physical, then I think we miss out on some very important aspects of training. Time in grade can help adjust ego, gives time to perfect technique, can instill a sense of humility, promote and develop leadership skills, and help calm that sense of urgency everyone seems to have today. For me, I tend to forget the destination (nth Degree) and enjoy the journey (training & teaching). How can you assume you are ready to test since YOU do not know what you do not know? How can someone advance another without a thorough knowledge of their true skill level and character? Just because you can execute a form, a breaking technique, self-defense manuever does not mean you have learned all that you need to be ready to advance. Each time I practice with a different person, I find that there are new applications or subtleties to incorporate. With each passing day I learn to incorporate my TKD teachings into my everyday life outside the dojang, extending courtesy, refining integrity, remembering perseverence, practicing self-control and building an indomitable spirit. These are things that cannot be developed in a few short months inside the dojang.
