CARLI TEPROFF MiamiHerald.com One by one, friends, family and former students of a slain martial arts instructor took turns lighting small candles that spelled out a simple word of remembrance: "YOUNG.'" ''No more tears,'' said Stella Do to the group who gathered to honor her father, Young Soo Do, killed last November outside of his North Miami academy. ``My father didn't like crying.'' Nearly two dozen mourners gathered in the lobby of the new Young Tae Kwon Do Academy in Northeast Miami-Dade this month to mark the one- year anniversary of Do's death. The family closed the academy's original North Miami location this year, in part because the memories of Do's murder were too painful. On Nov. 10, 2007, Young Soo Do was outside his North Miami studio, watching a man wash his car, when someone shot him. He died the next day from his injuries. The car washer, Leclerc Prosper, 62, was also shot, but was later released from the hospital. Police have still not found the shooter. ''It has been a very hard year for all of us,'' said Young Soo Do's son Ricky Do, before lighting a candle at the family-run martial arts studio. ``But we have banded together and become an even bigger family.'' Young Soo Do, who had his studio in North Miami for more than three decades, was known around the community for training thousands of students throughout the years -- including many police officers. When he was killed, many officers felt like they had lost one of their own. ''It's one of those cases I look at every day,'' said North Miami Police Detective Scott Croye. ``We are just hoping that someone has that one piece of information that will give the Do family some closure.'' At the time, police said witnesses saw a 2004 or 2005 black Mercedes- Benz C-Class with dark tinted windows leave the scene. Croye said the department has since worked hundreds of leads, but have not gotten anywhere. There is still a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of Young Soo Do's killer. Ricky Do said those close to his father -- including relatives, friends and students hope there will be justice. ''We just want whoever did this to be off the street so it doesn't happen to anyone else,'' he said. In the year that his father has been gone, Rick Do said he has done his best to keep the tae kwon do tradition in his family alive. Finding it difficult to go back to the North Miami studio, he opened a new, larger facility at 2626 NE 188th St. in Northeast Miami-Dade in March. Opening the new studio was also a way to carry on his father's dream of expanding the school and teaching even more students, Do said. Before the memorial, Ricky Do led a class of students who compete in tae kwon do tournaments. A picture of Grand Master Young Soo Do, as he was known, sits on the wall next to the late instructor's black belt and favorite saying: ``For Myself. For My School. For My Country.'' ''His presence is everywhere,'' Ricky Do said. Some students, who never met Young Soo Do, said they still felt like they knew him. ''I feel cheated that I never got to know him,'' said Liam Perez, 13, who started shortly after Young Soo Do's death. ``But I know everything I learn comes from him.'' Peter Cruz -- a North Miami Police officer who called Young Soo Do his second father -- couldn't believe a year has passed. ''It feels like yesterday,'' said Cruz, choking back tears. ``There aren't words to describe the pain.'' Cruz went along with another former student to the former site of North Miami studio on Nov. 10 -- exactly a year after the attack -- to lay a single rose on the parking spot where Young Soo Do was shot. ''He didn't deserve this,'' said Cruz, as he walked away. Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2008 10:23:53 -0800 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Maui Open Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Join International Competition at Maui Open USA Taekwondo November 21, 2008 The 2008 Maui Open promises to be a true international event with teams confirmed from Canada, Croatia, Slovenia, India, Jordan, Philippines and several more pending.
