Hosinsul is just self defense techniques practiced with a partner. That is all we do in hapkido. So when someone states that they practice hosinsul, I am also a bit bewildered. But I think these folks are practicing a prearranged solo form based or a specific competition rules based KMA. <<>> --__--__-- Message: 5 From: michael tomlinson To: Dojang Digest Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Hapkido 9th Dan for GM JR West Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2008 19:15:28 +0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I can't think of anyone who deserves this award more than GM West....congrats on the promotion....now that's what I have been talking about putting the time in rank and doing it the RIGHT WAY!!Michael Tomlinson > From: thedojang@sbcglobal.net> To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net> Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2008 10:16:07 -0800> Subject: [The_Dojang] Hapkido 9th Dan for GM JR West> > We've just learned that Gm JR West has been officially promoted to 9th > Dan by the Korea KidoHae. Other parts include breathing, falling, forms, kicking, etc. In our curriculum, there are specific hoshinsul or self-defense techniques to be learned at each level. These hoshinsul include escapes, striking or kicking back, joint locks and throws. For example, I teach my white belts 30 hoshinsul or 30 self-defense techniques. All of these are from a wrist grab so they can learn the basics. First 5 are escaping from the grab. Next 5 are escaping and striking back. Next 12 are joint locking techniques, and the final 8 are throwing techniques. Hoshinsul is not unique to Hapkido. It just means self-defense technique, so any art could have hoshinsul. If it is a self-defense art, it better have hoshinsul. What I have seen quite often is a TKD school teaching some Hapkido joint locks as a hoshinsul portion of their curriculum. Nothing wrong with that if the people doing it say, "We teach some techniques from Hapkido as our hoshinsul or self-defense techniques portion of our class." What isn't good is when these people say, "Oh, we do Hapkido too." Adding a few techniques from Hapkido is not the same as "Doing Hapkido." Especially when the hoshinsul are just a portion of what hapkido consists of. I have always been verbally told what I did well, what was satisfactory, what needed improvement, and what I failed. Now that I am an instructor at a TaeKwonDo school, we still don't use testing grading sheets. I like the idea of a set testing protocol. Would anyone be willing to share a copy of a grading sheet and a results summary so that I can get an idea for one of our own? I don't mind if it is from a different martial art or has different sections on it. I can make one to fit our curriculum with yours as a guide. Thanks in advance! This distinction loosely related from my Hapkido instructor, from my Tae Kwon Do instructor I usually hear it related as "Hoshinsul" being joint-controls and 'One Step Sparring' using strikes Note that in the above, hoshinsul is *usually* a defense against a grab of some sort. I've also seen and trained a sort of 'offensive hoshinsul' which entails using joint manipulation/control against someone who is trying to strike you. And it can get finer grained from there, you can break down 'self- defense' into many aspects to study and drill and understand the importance of the distinctions, and then reassemble into a fully rounded 'self-defense' approach On Dec 3, 2008, at 12:46 PM, J R Hilland wrote: > There you go Michael.
