As far as MDK goes, it was one of the original kwans. If you can show the material and you are MDK, I'm curious as to your concern. Richard Kim and Kim, yong hon did it, ostenisibly before your career began. This is a matter of history so why the concern about it now? Its a policy. This is one of the reasons that I am not a fan of rank. I believe that the focus on rank is a path to poor technique. It's like builing a house. You lay the foundation first before building the rest of the house. If you build on the foundation before the mortar has had a chance to set up, then the house will be unstable--no matter how much time and money is poored into it. We've all seen high ranking black belts that can't throw a proper punch, yet insist that they be called master or grandmaster. If you have to defend yourself, then rank is of little value. The only thing of value at that time is proper technique that works. Just like in life, rank is of small value compared to character. When I think of the direction Tae Kwon Do is headed, I'm reminded of the words of Gandhi: "we must become the change we want to see". J. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >From what little I know of Taekyon, it had been outlawed or frowned upon by the early 1900's. I would imagine that very few people now know what actual kicks were used at that time and before. This from the Wikipedia "Taekkyon never seems to have been widespread, and by the late 19th Century we know of only one Taekkyon competition a year in all of Korea. At the height of its popularity, even the king practiced Taekkyon, and Taekkyon matches were frequent. However, the next king outlawed Taekkyon matches, motivated by the gambling which took place around them - where people would gamble away their wives and houses - thus making it a purely military art. Subak split into two; yusul and Taekkyon, during the early Joseon dynasty. Taekkyon took a severe blow when Neo-Confucianism grew in popularity, and then the Japanese occupation damaged the art even more. Taekkyon has had a slight resurgence in recent days, getting the classification Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 76" on June 1, 1983. It is the only Korean martial art which possesses such a classification." So which art do you all think (or know) has actual kicking methods from Taekkyon? << The kicks of Sin Moo Hapkido come from SamRangDo Tek Gi. They are very similar to those from TaekKyon, not at all TKDish. But these days most of the kicks used in Hapkido in Korea are far more TKDish in nature. This directly from KIM Nam-jea of the KHF. He learned Hapkido from Sin Moo's GM Ji (Sung Moo Kwan Hapkido back then) and is now very active in the KHF in Seoul.
