Skipping one dan, usually from 2nd-4th was with us quite some time. Skipping 3 or 4 dans is the newest aberration. Converting dans from other arts into kukkiwon dans is nothing short of bizarre. Dan is indeed important. Of course there are those that perform poorly at high rank. My point is that this program will destroy TKD and make rank worthless. How did the dan ranks from the various Kwan get translated into Kukkiwon rank? I just can't believe that high ranks or even lower dan would go back to 9th kup and train up to their current dan rank. So I would wager they were given equal rank or perhaps even higher rank as a reward for joining up with the Kukkiwon. So......if they were able to translate Kwan rank into Kukkiwon rank then - what is wrong with translating rank from other TKD organizations to Kukkiwon rank? For that matter the "old masters" were ranked in Shotokan and then they formed the various Kwan. Did they start back at 9th kup? Nope - I would guess that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th dan all of a sudden were 7th or higher ranked in the "new" Korean art - of course it was all based on Tae Kyun, Kwon Bop, or some other ancient art. So........what's the difference between then and now? On Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:10 PM, zisheged@aol.com wrote: > Converting dans from other arts into kukkiwon dans is nothing short of > bizarre. Z. As to rank...we live in an imperfect world where charlatans, cheats, and lairs abound. The facts boil down to this...as a person, as a martial artist, as a martial arts instructor (regardless of rank) did you do your best today. Were you kind, honest, helpful? Did you live by the code/tenets you teach? If your wall is covered with certificates, plaques, and diplomas; but you live just to serve yourself you have not contributed to your family, your students, or your art. As to kicking...as a TKD practitioner we do jumping, spinning kicks in class and for those who are gifted in sparring. Kicking self-defense applications are simple...low, hard, and fast. Anything else invites disaster. Just my two cents worth. He wanted to learn to fight for his own reasons and when asked he said he wanted to go to the highest level; when he got there he got knocked on his butt...lol. I think schools that offer skip ranks need to have something like 100 man kumite...lol.   Jye --- On Mon, 12/8/08, Anthony Zahler wrote: I have seen 1st and 2nd Dans try to explain to Real Master level instructors how to do or teach a technique or concept. Not only is this Disrespectful but gives the less experienced Blackbelts a false sense of their own abilities. Except in one instance, they were incorrect in what they were trying to show also. I am sure there are some cases where a 2nd or 3rd Dan has just not tested for a long time and maybe, what I call a double test, is warranted but this was rare! It not fair to the other black belts who follow the rules, not fair to the skipper (or double tester) and not fair to their future students. I know I have had students from other "masters" and styles extol the rank of their former instructors, only to see the most sloppy and inaccurate techniques and forms that were taught by 21 year old masters or 25 year old 7th Dans(which should not be possible). How can you teach discipline but not be willing to put in the time? Same goes for honor, respect, INTEGRITY or indomitable spirit? OK, now I will step down off of my soap box, really! I have plantar fasciitis and have been living with it for quite some time now. So far I have heard some decent advice, but I would like to put in my 2 pence.   Wearing shoes with comfort inserts is okay, but there is something else you need, and that is a good arch support in your shoes. The best thing to do is to actually get a prescription for custom inserts or special shoes, but that is expensive. There are some decent inserts at Walmart, just make sure that they have good arch support.   You do not have to keep training in shoes. It is a good idea to do so while you are working to recover. After you have recovered, you can train barefoot again, just make sure you follow a good rehab routine, and then make the rehab routine part of your training regime FOREVER. It is also helpful to massage your arches and achilles tendon right before you hit the mat, and it is also helpful if you can soak your feet in warm to hot water beforehand. Make sure to stretch your achilles during your stretching before you start training.   Now, I am not a doctor or a liscensed physical therapist, but I can tell you a rehab routine that worked for me. The bone spurs went away in about a week, and the pain went away in about ten days of following this routine:   1. warm up with some calf raises ( 30-50 ) and rotate your feet at the ankles in both directions ( 15-20x ) 2. stretch the calf muscles as a runner would ( hands on wall in an elongated front stance ) 3. stretch the achilles for 20 sec. Do this twice for each leg. To do this stretch, you assume the same calf muscle stretch, but bend the knee of the leg you are stretching and place the other leg behind the calf of the leg you are stretching. 4. place a towel on the floor and use your toes to grab and squeeze the towel as if you wanted to pick it up or pull it toward yourself. Keep your feet on the floor during this exercise. Repeat for 3 sets of 15 for each foot. Increase the reps as you gain strength. Switch to a weight that can roll if you have acces to one. 5. using a ball or a rolling pin, roll your arches aggressively on the object for 3 sets of 60 sec. for each foot. 6. do 30 calf raises. 7. repeat the stretches you did at the start. 8. do this routine at least 2-3x per week.   This worked for me. What I'm hoping though is that there will be a nice balance between sports, tricks, training methods and self defense apps.   Jye --- On Thu, 12/11/08, Dakin Burdick wrote: Good to see my old master Do Ki-Hyun in action!  And there's even footage of GM Song these days -- how great!  Thanks to Jye for posting those links.  Very enjoyable! It has been one of those things that has existed for many many years, but most folks just were not aware of it. Plus it was mostly just something that Korean instructors had ready access to. ITF masters have transferred across, in effect skipping six or seven Kukki-TKD Dan ranks. One of my first experiences with skip dan-ing was when a US-based Korean instructor I knew in the 70s skipped from 5th to 7th. One of my more recent experiences with it was when a Korean-American instructor jumped from Kukki 2nd to Kukki 6th. What these examples had in common... the person was a full-time instructor, running a full-time dojang, thus adding more Kukki-TKD Dan ranked students to the Kukkiwon's books.
